Over the past few weeks, young people from BCYI have been using photography to capture their own perspectives of Black Creek — what they love, what they notice, what they carry, and what they hope can change.

Mario’s Circle is more than a photo project. It is a space for reflection, creativity, healing, and youth voice.

A look into the creation process of Mario’s Circle 📸

Our youth have spent the last few weeks documenting Black Creek through their own lens — capturing moments of connection, beauty, challenge, and community.

Mario’s Circle is a youth-led photo journal project rooted in voice, healing, and belonging. As we begin reviewing prints and curating the final images, we’re reminded of the power of giving young people the tools and space to tell their own stories.

This is just the beginning.

Through this process, youth are not only taking photos, they are telling stories, building confidence, and shaping how their community is seen and understood.

This week, we began reviewing prints, sharing reflections, and curating the images that will become part of the final zine and community showcase.

We’re proud of the honesty, care, and thought our youth are bringing into this project. This is what it looks like when young people are trusted to lead, create, and speak for themselves.

More to come.

Over the past few months, these students have been working closely with our Executive Director to explore ideas, interventions, and practical solutions that can help strengthen and support our work. We appreciate the time, thought, and collaboration they brought to this process.

We are also looking forward to Spring Capstone Day, where these projects will be showcased and students will have the opportunity to share their findings, celebrate their work, and engage the broader York community.

Thank you to the C4 students and faculty for creating space for innovation, interdisciplinary learning, and meaningful community impact.

You deserve safety, mentorship, community, and a soft life too. ✨

Every week, our young people show up. They show up with courage. They show up with questions. They show up with dreams bigger than their circumstances.

At BCYI, Black History is not just something we celebrate in February. It is something we live every single week through our programming, through our Youth Violence Prevention work, and through the safe spaces we continue to build together.

In a world that too often underestimates Black youth, we witness their brilliance, leadership, healing, and transformation in real time. That is legacy. That is power. That is resilience through community.

We are proud of every young person who walks through our doors and chooses growth. The future is already in the room. 🖤
