We are a film union representing nearly 3,000 highly skilled film, television and digital media Technicians across 14 technical departments in the Province of Ontario.

FilmOntario has asked the Government of Ontario to act in this year’s Fall Economic Statement and take meaningful steps to help improve the competitiveness of Ontario as a home for both domestic and service production, protect the good jobs for the people who work in this industry across the province and keep the cameras rolling in Ontario.

We’ve asked for two things:

✅ Increase the film and television tax credit rates, from 21.5% to 25% for the Ontario Production Services Tax Credit (OPSTC) and from 35% to 40% for the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit (OFTTC); and
✅ Invest an additional $26 million in the Ontario Creates IP Fund, directed toward linear content.

The government needs to hear directly from you: the crews, performers, creators and businesses who make Ontario’s screen industry work. All you need to do is add your name, your role and how long you’ve worked in the industry, and your letter will go to Premier Ford. The Ministers of Finance, and of Tourism, Culture and Gaming will be copied, along with your local MPP.

Dear Members,

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to reflect on the tragic legacy of the residential school system in Canada, to honour the thousands of Indigenous children who never returned home, and to stand in solidarity with survivors, their families, and communities.

While the history is deeply painful, this day also offers us a chance to look ahead with purpose. It serves as a reminder of the strength, resilience, and enduring cultures of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Despite generations of injustice, Indigenous communities continue to lead the way toward healing, education, and meaningful change.

NABET 700-M Unifor we recognize the importance of acknowledging this history and supporting reconciliation in all its forms. We extend our respect and gratitude to Indigenous peoples, their ancestors, and the land we share.

In 2021, the federal government declared September 30 a statutory holiday, however, the application of the holiday remains uneven across the country. We were able to have the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation recognized as a statutory holiday in our Collective Agreement in our last round of bargaining, and do not allow any variances to move observance of the day, because the purpose of the day is for individuals to recognize and reflect on the atrocities committed at residential schools and an opportunity to participate in community events to take action for reconciliation.

By learning, listening, and taking action, we each play a role in reconciliation.

Online Streaming Act Updates: NABET 700-M Unifor was one of the Canadian screen sector unions and organizations that co-signed an ad in The Globe and Mail supporting the protection of Canadian cultural sovereignty and Canadian content requirements in recent trade talks.

The ad follows Ottawa’s rejection of U.S. demands to weaken Canadian content requirements for streaming services, and reinforces the importance of rules requiring streamer contributions for Canadian content, discoverability of Canadian programs, and protections for French language programming.

A coalition of more than 50 screen-sector organizations, including NABET 700-M Unifor has released an open letter calling on the federal government to preserve the CRTC’s proposed 15% Canadian Programming Expenditure requirement on foreign streamers.

The joint statement gives appreciation for the government’s $600 million per year commitment but recognizes that the discretionary spending is subject to political pressure. The letter urges the government to ensure that new policy directions preserve the principle that foreign streaming services must make meaningful, predictable and enforceable contributions to Canadian programming.

Canada’s screen sector is aligned in its view that a predictable, balanced regulatory framework is vital to supporting hundreds of thousands of Canadian jobs, attracting private investment, and sustaining industries that generate billions of dollars in economic activity across every region of Canada.
