Vaisakhi has traditionally been a harvest festival in Punjab. Vaisakhi is primarily an agricultural celebration. When crops grow all green and swing in the breeze in the northern region of India, particularly in Punjab, when the Rabi crop is ready, farmers perform dances and sing songs to thank the environment. It is the beginning of the Punjabi New Year, and it is also a day to commemorate the year 1699 when Sikhism as a unified faith was founded. ICA wishes you a very happy and prosperous Baisakhi and the best for the new year to come.

Cheti Chand is a festival that marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year for Sindhi Hindus. The date of the festival is based on the lunar cycle of the lunisolar Hindu calendar in the Sindhi month of Chet (Chaitra). It typically falls in late March or early April near or on the same day as Gudi Padwa and Ugadi. This festival marks the arrival of spring and harvest and the birth of lord Jhulelal. People celebrate with major fairs, parties, processions and dancing. On this day, Sindhis carry Baharana Sahib, a representation of Jhulelal, to a nearby river or lake. The idol is carried in a public procession with music and chanting, then immersed in a body of water such as a river or sea. We wish all our Sindhi members and our community a very Happy Cheti Chand!

Ugadi is the New Year's Day celebrated in Andra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka in India. The day is celebrated by drawing colourful patterns on the floor called Muggulu, hanging mango leaf decorations on doors called torana, buying and giving gifts, visiting Hindu temples and preparing and sharing a special food called pachadi. Pachadi combines all flavors – sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. In Telugu and Kannada Hindu traditions, it is a symbolic reminder to expect all flavors of experiences in the coming new year and make the most of them. This day is also celebrated in other parts of India as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and is a national public holiday in Mauritius. Happy Ugadi to you all!
