Its a blessing having Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park right down the road from us. The Bench, The Hills, and The Grasslands to our south and The Dunes to our north are all such unbelievable landscapes. Don't let anyone tell you Saskatchewan is just flat. We got some bumps and not just on the roads!

90-Year Celebration of the Coop in Tompkins, Saskatchewan.

But what exactly is a Co-op, and what makes it different from an ordinary business?

A Co-op is owned collectively by its members, essentially the people who shop there and use its services. Instead of existing primarily to generate profits for outside shareholders, a Co-op exists to serve the needs of its members and community. Using resources and purchasing power to build and sustain something all members have a stake in.

That idea has deep roots across rural Saskatchewan. For generations, co-operatives have helped small communities maintain grocery stores, fuel services, agricultural supplies, and other necessities that might otherwise be difficult to sustain locally.

This upcoming anniversary BBQ truly captures the essence of what a Co-op is about: community supporting community. Proceeds from the BBQ will go to our local Senior Centre, a place where our seniors can connect with one another over coffee and stories, where cards and bingo are played weekly, and where other activities and events take place throughout the year.

Places like the Senior Centre are an important part of a small town. They give older adults a place to remain active in the community, maintain friendships, and build meaningful connections. That social connection becomes especially important as people age; helping seniors remain independent, connected, and living in their own communities longer. Tompkins is a great community for seniors and young people alike.

There is something especially fitting about a 90-year-old community institution giving back to the older residents who have helped build this community over the decades.

A thriving small town needs institutions, gathering places, relationships, and reasons for people to keep participating in community life. The Co-op, the Senior Activity Centre, and even Frontier Initiative itself are examples of that.

Congratulations to the Tompkins Co-op on 90 years! We’ll see you at the BBQ on Tuesday!

The big summer Ball Tournament is coming up this Saturday in Tompkins, Saskatchewan organized by our Community Hall Board!

Our local volunteer Tompkins Fire Department will be BBQing for lunch and the Tompkins Library will offering chicken sliders for dinner.

There will be ball games and vendors all day as well a big kareoke bash in the evening!

These kinds of events are what keep our small towns and their institutions alive and independently funded. We at the Frontier Initiative cannot overstate how grateful we are for everyone that contributes or attends these sorts of events, community starts here.
