Here are some awesome photos of the hereditary chiefs, matriarchs, fishing families, youth, Indigenous knowledge holders, and culture keepers—along with friends of migratory salmon, government representatives, scientists, and allies— who gathered on Tseshaht and Hupačasath Territories for the Potlatch for Migratory Salmon. The event was hosted by Ḥupač̓asatḥ Ḥawił Tsu Tsii In (Alton Watts) and Ḥiškiiʔatḥ Elder and artist Aniičačist (Tim Paul). The hosts were Hupačasath supported by Hesquiaht.

Over two days, participants came together to strengthen cultural teachings and share good feelings while raising awareness of challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous communities working to protect their rivers, streams, and creeks. Among the key issues discussed were the impacts and the harms associated with open-net pen fish farms.

A Migratory Salmon Declaration was developed and signed by the hereditary chiefs in attendance calling to ensure salmon populations are thriving and continue to feed future generations by all means necessary, including the removal of open-net pen fish farms from the Pacific Ocean.

Have you ever watched the spectacular salmon run? From the surface, the river appeared like any other, but under the surface there can be hundreds of wild salmon! 💖

If this is something you want to experience as well, it’s not too late! Lucky for us, this year’s salmon run has seen an increase compared to earlier years in many areas.
Rivers around the coast such as the Mamquam Spawning Channel in Squamish, the Puntledge River in Comox, the Holy Creek in Coquitlam, and the Serpentine River in Surrey, are all great spots to see spawning salmon from October-December.

Salmon hold a pivotal role in keeping coastal ecosystems alive and thriving and we are so excited to see the return numbers growing this year!
