🧵 Democrats teach voter ID and election integrity… just not in America.
The Democratic Party has an international arm called the National Democratic Institute (NDI). It is funded with roughly $181 million a year in U.S. tax dollars. Its board has included Stacey Abrams, Donna Brazile, and Tom Daschle.
For more than 40 years, the NDI has gone around the world teaching developing countries that voter identification is essential to election integrity. They have recommended biometric systems (fingerprints), praised photo ID requirements, and tracked how quickly countries issue voter ID cards.
Meanwhile, the same party calls the SAVE Act “Jim Crow 2.0.”
Same organization. Same people. Opposite positions.
Here are just a few examples from NDI’s own materials:
• In a 2001 NDI guide, they stress that only citizens should vote and that voter ID cards “introduce an additional safeguard into the system.” They treat photo ID and fingerprints as standard election infrastructure.
• In Nicaragua, NDI’s complaint wasn’t that voter ID existed — it was that the government wasn’t issuing the ID cards fast enough. Temporary IDs were criticized for ignoring “the far more fundamental problem.”
• In Morocco, NDI praised the switch to requiring just one photo ID at the polls and called it “a positive development.”
• In Bangladesh, NDI said voter photo ID cards gave “a sense of empowerment and belonging to the disadvantaged and marginalized people of the country, particularly women.”
• Chuck Schumer has called the SAVE Act “Jim Crow-type laws.” NDI’s own guidance says individuals who want to vote “must somehow prove their identity, demonstrating that they are who they say they are” — and that they must also demonstrate citizenship.
The biggest irony of all: Stacey Abrams, who has served as NDI vice chair, co-led the observation mission for Nigeria’s 2023 election. The final report called biometric voter ID “the most important contribution to raising confidence in electoral integrity.” The same Stacey Abrams has repeatedly labeled Georgia’s voter ID law “Jim Crow in a suit.”
NDI has observed elections in more than 100 countries. By the standards they publish and enforce overseas, the 14 U.S. states that still have no voter ID requirement would be flagged as failing basic election integrity.
The Democratic Party tells the rest of the world that voter ID is democracy.
It tells Americans that voter ID is Jim Crow.
