Take a break and go touch grass, prairie grass! June 14 to 20 is Native Prairie Appreciation Week, the perfect time to get out to enjoy the speargrasses, needle grasses, wheatgrasses, June grass, blue grama grass and hundreds of other native plants that make up our prairie landscape.
Saskatchewan’s native prairie includes over 70 species of native grasses, hundreds of wildflowers, dozens of shrubs and trees, and many non-vascular plants and lichens. Flashy flowers like the western red lily and prairie crocus are more recognizable than many of the others, but each species has significance for Saskatchewan’s ecology and identity.
Declared by the ministries of Environment and Agriculture, Native Prairie Appreciation Week celebrates its 28th anniversary alongside the Prairie Conservation Action Plan.
In the spirit of appreciating native prairie, tell us your favourite prairie plant or share a picture if you have one, and learn more about native prairie and the Prairie Conservation Action Plan here: https://pcap-sk.org/
