Youth Call to Action - AFN Climate Gathering

Indigenous youth from across Turtle Island are making a call to action. We are speaking up from our territories about what matters to us.

The land we call home, stewarded since time-immemorial, the water that brings life- honoured for generations, the animals we call siblings, providing since the coldest of winters and driest of summers, all stand to be negatively affected by Bill 5, Bill C-5, and Bill C-39.

We are stronger when we come together as one. First Nations youth are leading by example, carrying the strength and resilience of our ancestors and communities.

We are done waiting as decisions are made about our rights, our futures, and what is not ours to sell.

Reach out to us and to the people of your respective territories.

Keep an eye out for future actions and ways to get involved.

We’re honoured to be a part of five Indigenous youth from three grassroots movements: Walking Forward Together, Here We Stand, and Okiniwak, attending the Assembly of First Nations 4th National Climate Gathering in Hamilton, Ontario, October 5–8.

This gathering is an opportunity for us to share our community experiences, connect with other Indigenous youth, and strengthen relationships rooted in protecting our lands and waters, uplifting Indigenous youth leadership, and upholding Treaty and inherent rights.

We look forward to bringing what we learn back home and continuing to build youth-led advocacy, education, outreach, and action within our communities.

A huge thank you to Mattagami First Nation for welcoming Walking Forward Together to your Annual Powwow! 💛

Our members had such a great day celebrating, connecting with community, supporting vendors, and enjoying the powwow.

Two of our co-founders had booths set up and had an amazing day, and Sierra will be back again tomorrow!

Our co-founder Kendrick Jeremiah from Missanabie Cree First Nation also danced every chance he got. 🪶

Miigwech Mattagami First Nation for having us and for such a beautiful day! We’re grateful to have been part of it.

Walking Forward Together is gathering questions, concerns, resources, and community feedback about the proposed Cybersecurity Monitoring and Data Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.

Many important details have not yet been made public, including water use and cooling, environmental impacts, noise, power requirements, future expansion, data ownership, and more.

Come sit with us, visit, connect, and have some good conversations around the fire tonight at Missanabie Cree First Nation!

🔥 Marshmallows for the fire
🪵 Please bring your own roasting sticks if you can! We can help cut them if needed.

We’ll also have information pamphlets about Walking Forward Together and handouts about Bill 5 for anyone who wants to learn more.

Tonight, we gathered around the fire in Missanabie Cree First Nation and asked everyone who came to sit with us a simple question:

“What’s your favourite thing about being on the land?”

The answers were simple, but they say so much: being with family, fishing, canoeing, swimming, sharing food, and simply feeling more like ourselves.

These are the conversations we want to make space for with Walking Forward Together. Sitting around the fire, sharing stories, listening to one another, and remembering why our lands, waters, families, and communities matter so deeply.
