Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins (ACT) is a volunteer-driven, charitable organization working to increase food security in Timmins and area.

ACT's vision is to work together for a food secure community where all residents have the resources to access and prepare healthy food. Our programs include: Collective Cooking which brings community members together to cook, learn new kitchen skills, and prepare take-home meals; Community Gardens where we provide land for community members to grow fresh produce for themselves and for emergency fo

od services; and the Good Food Program (Good Food Box and Good Food Market) that breaks down the economic, transportation, and knowledge barriers to eating well. You can easily order a Good Food Box with our online order form: https://hipaa.jotform.com/AntiHungerCoalition/orderGFB

In response to COVID-19, we've worked with community partners to offer the Emergency Food Hamper โ€” a box of non-perishables and fresh produce that is home delivered for people who can't physically get to their food bank. As a 100% local grassroots charity, donations and fundraising are key to ensuring we can continue our critical community food security work. Todayโ€™s Hunger Action Month post features our very own Good Food Box program! Though weโ€™ve showcased some of the details before, today weโ€™ll be doing a bit more in depth of a dive into what the Good Food Box is, and the value it brings to recipients. To beginโ€ฆ

Originally conceived by Foodshare Toronto in 1994, the Good Food Box program is designed to connect local farmers directly to residents without any additional intermediaries. One organization becomes responsible for the logistics of ordering, packaging, and distributing the purchased produce. This lowers the end cost of produce between lower handling costs and greater access to wholesale pricing!๐Ÿ’ธ

๐Ÿค—Good Food Boxes are for everyone! There are no barriers to ordering, and you are free to purchase as many as you would like. You can pre-order boxes for multiple months, and even directly sponsor another Box to add to our monthly pool of Sponsored Boxes!

Our sponsored Good Food Boxes are open to everyone who needs it! Purchasing one before does not disqualify you from ordering a Sponsored Box later.

However, to ensure we can reach as many households as possible, we do limit Sponsored Boxes to 1 per household. To ensure everyone has a fair chance of receiving a Sponsored Box, as we have limited amounts, we also require registration to be done every month.๐Ÿ“‹

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐›๐ž๐ง๐ž๐Ÿ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ?

With only us as an intermediary, the price of the GFB stays low for recipients. Purchasing a GFB from us not only saves you 20-30% on average for fresh, local produce, each box purchased also helps to sponsor a Box for a community member in need!

Though the contents of the GFB varies from month to month, we try to ensure each Box (Small or Large) contains one leafy green vegetable and at least one fruit.

Today, let's look at some of our local food rescue apps! ๐Ÿ“ฑ

Right now in Timmins, we have three food rescue apps in operation:

Second Harvest: Their mission is to keep food where it belongs: on plates and out of landfills. They connect food related businesses, from farm to grocer, to local non-profit organizations. They handle the logistics, helping businesses donate excess foodstuffs to food banks, charitable meal providers, and other social service agencies.

Too Good To Go: Participating businesses, such as restaurants or grocers, fill Surprise Bags with unsold meals, prepared foods, or surplus items. Recipients can then reserve a bag and collect it during the pre-set window. While these Surprise Bags are still paid for, they come at reduced prices!

Flashfood: This app partners with local grocery stores to list and sell surplus grocery items nearing their expiration date. Customers with the app can purchase their order directly through the app, then travel to the relevant grocer to collect their food.

Their scope, operation, and end-users differ. But all three are united in the goal of reducing food waste, not just within Timmins, but globally! Their work helps to put good, affordable food where it is best utilized. ๐ŸŒฝ๐Ÿ๐Ÿž

โ™ฆ All deposit-bearing alcohol containers over 100ml (beer cans/bottles, wine bottles, spirit bottles, coolers)

If you can, please give your empties a quick rinse and a sort, keeping cans and glass separated. It keeps our storage clean and speeds up our sorting process.

As August ends and September begins, we find ourselves returning to the hustle and bustle of work and school. But today isnโ€™t just the day we see the return of yellow school busses and the vibrant autumn colours. ๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿ‚

Today marks the beginning of Hunger Action Month. A time, not just to reflect on the struggles of our fellow neighbours who experience food insecurity, but to recognize and thank the amazing people and organizations who work endlessly to provide access to food for those who need it.

Throughout September we will be showcasing various aspects of food insecurity, including the barriers to food security and the various organizations and programs that work to remove these barriers, food safety awareness and education, and some recipes and tips for utilizing low-cost, high-yield ingredients and pantry staples.

We will begin this week by recognizing our local food banks and the people who work to keep them operating. We know first-hand how unnecessary it is to remind the City with the Heart of Gold to donate their time, money, and effort to supporting those in need. ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿช™

๐Ÿ™But this week, why not send a thank you to one of our local organizations? Let them know how theyโ€™ve impacted your life, or the life of someone you know. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ
