Breaking stigma starts with us.

Carrying naloxone is a powerful way to protect those we care about.

Recovery is not one-size-fits-all. If you want to talk about what is right for you, contact Victoria at 705-817-9580

For some people, sobriety is the goal. For others, the first step may be reducing use, staying safer, rebuilding relationships, improving health, or simply making it through another day.

Everyone's journey is different, and every positive step deserves to be recognized.

Harm reduction is about meeting people where they are—with compassion, respect, and without judgment. By supporting individuals in setting their own goals and reducing the risks associated with substance use, we create opportunities for trust, connection, and lasting change.

Progress isn't defined by one destination. It's defined by moving forward, one step at a time.

💜 Every person deserves dignity, support, and the opportunity to make choices that are right for them.

International Overdose Awareness Day – Timmins 2026

DIY Community Health, Northern College, and Misiway Milopemahtesewin Community Health Centre are coming together to host a public event recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day on Monday, August 31 at 6:00 PM at Imagine Cinemas Timmins.

This event is an opportunity to remember those we have lost, recognize the people and communities affected by the crisis, learn from local experiences, and come together around actions that can make a difference.

Women, trans, and gender-diverse people experiencing gender-based violence often navigate multiple and intersecting challenges, including homelessness, drug use, and poverty. Many are also navigating the criminal legal, family policing (‘child protection’), immigration, and other government systems.

In response, shelters across Ontario are adapting their practices to reduce barriers, expand access, and better support shelter participants with complex and intersecting needs.

The HIV Legal Network’s Responsive Shelter project highlights practical, low-barrier approaches emerging across shelter settings. While this initiative builds on our work with Ontario’s Violence Against Women (VAW) sector, the practices featured here are relevant across emergency, drop-in, transitional, and supportive shelter models. The page is designed for shelter operators, advocates, service providers, and community partners seeking to expand access, reduce harm, and strengthen safety through trust-based approaches.

This quote unfortunately hit really close to home for us here at Shelter House. It is important that we use kindness and knowledge to help reshape these dominant narratives in society.

During the downpour last week we saw first-hand the discomfort and anguish it brought our underhoused neighbours.

Interested in hearing more from this wise woman? Be sure to check out our upcoming event next month, which includes an art show!
