At One Bowl, Indigenous history isn't something we reflect on only once a year.

It's present in every conversation with community leaders, every housing project, every training program, and every partnership we build.

Across Turtle Island, we have the privilege of working alongside Indigenous communities that continue to lead and shape the future of housing and community development.

Miigwetch to the Elders, leaders, knowledge keepers, and community members who continue to share their stories and guide the path forward.

From April 27 to May 1, we hosted a hands-on Thermolog Contractor Training Program in Timmins, Ontario, bringing together seven trainees from three different construction companies for an intensive week of learning and building.

Each day, teams from Shore Contracting, Cloutier Construction / Guy's Custom Cabinets and Countertops, Missinaibi Drilling Services Ltd., and Xpert Contracting worked side by side in a shared training space. Together, they brought a mini mono-pitch Thermolog unit to life from the ground up, moving through every stage of construction including wall installation, windows and doors, roofing, electrical integration, finishing, and final outfitting.

More than just a build, the program was designed to strengthen hands-on Thermolog installation skills while also developing participants into future trainers. The goal is to grow local expertise and capability so Thermolog homes can be built more efficiently and at greater scale across Northern, rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.

This work was supported by strong local partners, with all non-Thermolog materials sourced through Timmins Building Supplies Home Hardware and electrical components supported by Heritage North Electric.

We also want to sincerely thank Siva's Family Restaurant for providing lunch throughout the five days. The meals were truly appreciated and helped keep the whole team energized throughout the training.

We’re incredibly proud of what was built together and even more excited about what this group will go on to do next.

Follow along over the next few posts for day-by-day highlights from the training program and the build process.

This past April, our team attended the 2026 Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA) Congress on Housing and Homelessness in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, held from April 21 to 23.

The Congress brought together more than 600 housing professionals from across Canada for several days of dialogue, networking, and knowledge sharing focused on strengthening the housing sector at a national level. It was a valuable opportunity to connect with partners at our booth, reconnect with familiar faces, and build new relationships across housing, infrastructure, and community development.

One of the highlights was hearing from keynote speaker Ana Bailao, who spoke directly about housing supply challenges, the importance of quality development, and the need for coordinated national efforts to accelerate housing construction. She also highlighted funding already being released through Build Canada Homes to support shovel-ready housing projects, reinforcing the momentum many organizations and communities are working toward every day.

Throughout the event, conversations consistently emphasized not only increasing the supply of affordable housing but also improving the quality and long-term impact of those developments within communities across the country. That balance between speed, quality, and long-term sustainability is something we continue to carry forward in our own work.

Thank you to the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA) for hosting another successful Congress and for creating space for collaboration, innovation, and sector-wide alignment across the housing sector.

Congratulations to Missanabie Cree First Nation on receiving the 2026 Community Housing Award at the First Nations Housing Conference.

In 2025, the Nation completed a six-unit Housing Resettlement Project on their traditional lands, creating high-quality, energy-efficient homes designed to be culturally and climatically appropriate for the community. The project was delivered through a strong partnership between Missanabie Cree First Nation, One Bowl, and Shore Contracting.

A key part of the initiative was an eight-week community-based training program, where six community members completed Health and Safety certifications and gained hands-on construction experience. Their dedication helped bring the homes to completion ahead of schedule while building valuable skills and capacity for future projects.

During the Nation's annual gathering, the construction site was opened to additional community members, welcoming more than 100 visitors who toured the homes and had the opportunity to stack Thermologs themselves. Moments like these created a strong sense of pride, connection, and shared ownership in the project.

This award recognizes the leadership, partnerships, and commitment that made the project possible and the vision of building stronger homes for future generations on traditional lands.

Congratulations to Chelsie Parayko and the MCFN Waaskegun Housing Committee, and to everyone at Missanabie Cree First Nation. We are honoured that One Bowl Housing Corporation had the opportunity to work alongside you on such an impactful project.

Stronger Alliances. Stronger Homes.

That theme was brought to life at this year's First Nations Housing Conference, where our team had the opportunity to connect with community leaders, partners, and organizations working toward stronger housing solutions with First Nations communities.

We were proud to share a booth with Shore Contracting, where we had many great conversations with attendees and partners about building stronger homes, strengthening community capacity, and supporting long-term housing solutions.

The conference also featured many insightful presentations. We had the chance to hear Wilbur McLean from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) speak about funding opportunities available to communities and organizations working to advance housing initiatives.

We also attended a presentation by Padraic Taaffe, EDO of Chapleau Cree First Nation, who shared the Chapleau Cree Micro-Subdivision Project, highlighting an innovative approach to expanding serviced lots and creating new housing opportunities within the community.

In one of the lighter moments of the conference, our Executive Director, Candace Larsen, jumped into the competition for a chance to win a 2025 Building Code Guide book.

Events like this create space for meaningful conversations, knowledge sharing, and new partnerships. We're grateful for the connections made and look forward to continuing to build stronger homes through stronger alliances.

Neeganii Iishawin continues to live up to its motto, “To lead to the Gathering Place.” What started just a few years ago as an inspiring gathering has quickly grown into a vibrant event that brings together communities, partners, and leaders from across the region to share ideas, opportunities, and collaboration.

Beyond the panels and presentations, some of the best moments were the ones shared with the people who made this gathering so special. We loved connecting with familiar faces and meeting new ones along the way.

Thank you to the organizers and partners who continue to make Neeganii Iishawin such an impactful event. We are grateful to be part of the journey and look forward to continuing these conversations in the years ahead.

The Indigenous Lands Symposium 2026 once again brought people together for important conversations around sovereignty, innovation, culture, and collaboration. It was inspiring to see so many voices united by a shared commitment to community, culture, and our lands. Congratulations to the team on another successful symposium.

This year also marks a special milestone: 10 years of Development GP Inc. Congratulations to the entire team for a decade of advancing and upholding rights through a collaborative approach that enhances social, cultural, and environmental well-being.

Wahkohtowin is a social enterprise of three First Nations communities, grounded in the responsibility of Rights Holders to ensure that what we do today supports the prosperity of future generations. We are proud to grow from the strong foundation created by and its founding Nations and to continue building on that shared vision.

We are especially proud of David Flood, who is celebrating 10 years with Wahkohtowin. His dedication and leadership have contributed meaningfully to advancing Indigenous rights and supporting the well-being of our shared traditional territory. It was an honour to see him recognized at the symposium.

Thank you to the team for your leadership and commitment to healthy lands, strong communities, and future generations. We look forward to continuing this important work together.
