As part of the Vittoria Dam Decommissioning Project, our staff are conducting baseline monitoring of the current conditions of the watercourse before work begins. On this day, staff completed fish biomass surveys to estimate the total mass of different fish species within the watercourse. 🐟

We’ll continue to collect data and monitor conditions as the project advances, helping us guide our approach along the way.

To learn more about this project and how we are using this data, visit the project webpage here, https://www.lprca.on.ca/flood-forecasting-warning/vittoria-dam-decommissioning-project/

Following the completion of the Vittoria Dam Class Environmental Assessment, the LPRCA is making progress towards the implementation of the preferred alternative to decommission the dam.

Reservoir drawdown has not started, and no stoplogs have been removed yet. The next steps are to finalize the detailed engineering design, continue baseline monitoring, and complete required regulatory approvals!

This project was funded in part by the Canada Water Agency as part of the Great Lakes Freshwater Ecosystem Initiative. To learn more about the Vittoria Dam Decommissioning, visit the project webpage here, https://www.lprca.on.ca/flood-forecasting-warning/vittoria-dam-decommissioning-project/

With autumn finally here, may I ask what are you looking forward to most this season? For me, it’s the fall colours every single time. And as a perfect example, here’s a stunning aerial view of Backus Conservation Area from 2024.

Backus is one of Norfolk County’s most treasured places, not just for its beauty, but for its story. From above, you can see how the forests, wetlands, and winding trails all fit together like a living patchwork quilt. Backus protects some of the last remaining pieces of Carolinian forest in Ontario, along with rich wetlands that support countless species of birds, plants, and wildlife.

It’s a place where history and nature meet, the old mill, the heritage buildings, the quiet ponds, the towering trees, all wrapped in the kind of peace you can only find when you step away from the busy world. Backus isn’t just scenic, it’s meaningful. It’s a reminder of what Norfolk County has fought to preserve, and what we’re lucky enough to enjoy.

Is this a beautiful sight or what ..lol. WOW !!!!
