The Coalition for Waverley Park is a not for profit, charitable volunteer run organization founded in 1995 by concerned Thunder Bay citizens, who worked to save the Park and the Central School property from condominium development. Several years ago, we ran a capital campaign and worked with the City to construct the band shell. Every summer, with support from the City and the Musicians Trust, we
host weekly concerts in the park showcasing local musicians Waverley Park is Ontario's 2nd oldest municipal park, and the Central School is one of the first schools in the city. The Coalition partnered with Magnus Theatre, Northwestern Ontario's professional theatre company, to adapt Central School for its theatre facilities. Today The Coalition, along with the Thunder Bay Horticultural Society, help to maintain the gardens around Magnus Theatre. On the site of the old school baseball diamond, The Coalition created "The Field of Dreams" as a tribute to past Coalition members. The Coalition also hosts an annual Picnic in the Park, leads a Jane's Walk through the area, supports the City Parks Department with suggestions and concerns about the park, and acts as its custodians.
