A bicycle can be an affordable way to get around—and so much more.

We came across this story about Amartya Sen, Nobel laureate in Economic Sciences, who once cycled through the West Bengal countryside to weigh children himself as part of his research.

It got us thinking about how something as simple as a bicycle can help us reach people, connect with communities, and see the world a little differently.

Who gets to move around our city safely? Who has access to affordable transportation? And what would Thunder Bay look like if walking, cycling, and rolling were easier options for everyone, all year round?

These are some of the questions behind this year’s Northwest Climate Gathering theme: Active Transportation: Moving Toward Zero Emissions.

Let’s bring our experiences, ideas, and hopes together and imagine what’s possible.

Bicycles are not a common tool in economic science, but Amartya Sen's bicycle played a role in his research.

A large part of his work focused on the conditions of the poorest members of society and how these can be improved. In a study on differences between baby girls and boys, Sen employed an assistant to weigh the children. Problems arose when some children resisted being weighed, and one even bit the assistant. The episode ended with Amartya Sen bicycling through the countryside of West Bengal, weighing the children himself.

Amartya Sen was awarded the prize in economic sciences in 1998 for his studies of social choice, welfare measurement and poverty research.

What will the 2026 economic sciences prize award? Find out today.
