International Overdose Awareness Day invites us to face the painful reality of overdose and its devastating impact. Behind every statistic is a person β€” a name, a face, a family, and a story. While not every overdose is fatal, every overdose can leave lasting impacts on individuals, families, and communities.

This day is also an opportunity to challenge the stigma surrounding substance use and addiction. Too often, families grieving the loss of someone they love experience not only heartbreak, but shame, judgment, and silence. Grief should never be met with stigma. Compassion must come first.

August 31 marks International Overdose Awareness Day β€” a day to honour and remember those we have lost to overdose, hold space for those living with grief, and come together to prevent further loss.
It’s also an important reminder that substance use and mental health are deeply connected. Stigma, isolation, and barriers to care can increase risk, while compassion, understanding, connection, and timely support can help save lives.πŸ’›β€οΈπŸ–€πŸ€πŸ¦…
