Registration for our upcoming Cooking for Cred program is open! Cooking for Cred is a 7 week Cooking Skills Program where all participants gain their Safe Food Handling Certification as well as exposure to many new techniques, skills, and personalities from the Thunder Bay food scene.

The course starts Monday, October 26th and finishes Thursday, December 10th. Classes run Monday through Thursday from 12:45pm to 3:30pm. This course has no cost and is open to anyone who is a permanent resident or citizen of Canada between the ages of 18 - 30 years old. Transportation support is provided in the form of bus tickets. A $500 completion honorarium is available for all graduates with 80% or better attendance. This course is eligible for 1 highschool co-op credit through our partner AETS.

.lodge started their Mind Your Food programming in the Roots backyard learning how to use all parts of the Nika (Canada Goose). We made the most delicious goose soup using Loryns family recipe, using geese that were donated by some local community members. These geese will be featured in our community meals 🙌 We also welcomed Paul Francis Sr and Andrew Mandaamin ❤ Miigwech to all the learning from the Nika!

A huge thank you to Enbridge Gas for their support of $10,000 to our urban farm programs, growing sustainably right in the heart of the city. Running these sites so they can be productive and welcoming takes a lot of work and inputs and we’re grateful to Enbridge for coming on board with us!

And that’s a wrap on the 2026 SHOW crew season! These folks have showed up day after day, for 20 weeks, to steward and care for the Lillie St Farm and at the same time, learn a bit more about the community and themselves too. They’re a work hard/play hard team that have each others back, celebrate their achievements together and bear the brunt of the hard days together too. To most of you, you’ve met them through their sweet strawberries, perfect carrots or colourful flower bouquets, but to us, they’re an important part of the fabric of Roots.

Twenty weeks is no small feat so join us in congratulating them on a season well done! You’ll keep seeing them around - there are many doors into and out of Roots, but for now, so long friends and thanks for an incredible season! Pictured here is the crew on their last (ish) day, harvesting squash... as well their first day in the office, way back in May.

A few students from NOSM University—Université de l'EMNO came by yesterday to learn about Roots and all we do. Together with our volunteer Dawne-Marie, they prepped all of the red velvet beet cakes for today's senior's meal! 🫜

We are partnering with Roots to Harvest to offer subsidized fresh produce through a local community food market. Our goal is to make nutritious food more affordable, accessible, and easier to choose for individuals and families in our community.

By increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables, we hope to support healthier choices and promote overall well-being.

A gentle reminder to folks about our urban farms at this time of year - we are still harvesting food from them! Fall may be up on us and it may look like no one is there because summer is over, but we have been counting on those veggies to come ripe and to add them to our meals and programs this fall and winter.

This month all of our Gete-Okosomin squash was taken (this would have required a vehicle and a few hands because there was a lot!) and cabbages and carrots seem to be finding legs en masse and leaving too now.

If you see folks in the gardens making large harvests, please feel free to remind them that the food has been grown and cared for, for an upcoming purpose. And, if you're one of those folks harvesting on the side, reach out to us - you're obviously a hard working night-time farmer and we'd love your help!
