The hourly wage is only part of the picture.
When comparing a career as a UBC Millwright, look at wages, pension, benefits, holiday & vacation pay, and the training available throughout your career.
Rates, contributions, and eligibility vary by province, classification, and Local. Review the details that apply to you before comparing the whole package.

A better wage is a reason to consider joining the union. The working life that comes with it deserves the same attention.
For experienced Millwrights, that means comparing pension contributions, benefits, continued training, and union representation alongside the hourly rate. It also means understanding what work is available, how dispatch operates and what travel may be involved.
Before making a move, get a clear picture of what membership would mean for you.

This week our Millwrights took part in the 5-day CITF Rigger & Signaller qualification course, gaining valuable hands on experience in rigging, signalling, safe lifting practices, and calculations.
Training like this is a critical part of developing skilled tradespeople who are prepared to work safely and confidently on the jobsite.

Thank you to Walter Gretschman of Millwright Local 1443 for your time in sharing your knowledge to make this week a success, Carpenters Union Local 1669 for accomodating us in your space, as well as LH North for the crane & operator!

“When you get involved, you realise, ‘Oh, my voice matters.’”

That reflection captures the value of the Member Engagement Program Conference 2026.

Members came together to ask questions, share experiences and strengthen connections across the union. The conversations highlighted how participation builds a sense of belonging and gives members practical tools to contribute.

Thank you to everyone who shared their perspective. Your questions and involvement help shape the conversations that move our union forward.

By the time a project needs its crew, many of the decisions that shape its workforce have already been made.
Bringing the MRC into planning early creates time to forecast labour needs, connect contractors with experienced Millwrights, and identify opportunities for apprentices to develop.
The workforce conversation belongs at the beginning.
