Ontario's labour market rebounded in 2026 Q2, adding 61,900 jobs (0.8%) after a 52,900-job decline the prior quarter. The gains came entirely from full-time work (+74,300), which more than offset a drop in part-time positions (-12,400), and were driven mainly by the private sector (+48,600) and self-employment (+17,000), with public-sector employment slipping slightly (-3,600). Core-age workers (25–54) accounted for most of the growth (+63,300), youth employment ticked up modestly (+900), while employment among those 55 and older fell (-2,300). By industry, health care (+25,600), finance, insurance and real estate (+15,400), manufacturing (+14,100), professional, scientific and technical services (+8,700), and business support services (+6,600) led the gains, partially offset by losses in wholesale and retail trade (-14,500), construction (-4,100), and utilities (-2,700).
As a result, the province's overall unemployment rate fell to 7.2%, with declines among core-age workers (6.6% to 6.1%) and youth (15.9% to 15.7%), while the rate for older workers edged up slightly to 4.8%.

Northwestern Ontario had the second-highest job vacancy rate in Canada during the first quarter of 2026. This means that employers are having difficulty finding workers to fill available positions. This is often a sign of a tight labour market, where demand for workers exceeds the available supply.
