Beaverdams Church, in the Municipality of Thorold, not only bears the name of one of the most important battles of the War of 1812-14, but is situated near the site of what was once the first free, non-denominational school in the British Empire. Indeed, it was here that the father of the Ontario Public School System, Egerton Ryerson, first preached. Founded in 1832, the two-and-a-half storey, han

d-dressed timber framed structure hosted regular Methodist services until 1890; but the building remained the focus of worship and meeting for local residents throughout the 20th century under the administration of trustees of the nearby Trinity United Church. Work began in 1990 to preserve this important piece of provincial and national heritage. It was designated as a heritage site in 1994. By 1999, assessments by structural engineers and heritage consultants noted that the building was in dire need of immediate attention. And, while there has been no shortage of public support -- from municipal committees to long-standing efforts by neighbours and local residents -- for preserving this unique piece of Canadian history, nothing could be done until ownership was transferred from the United Church of Canada to the City of Thorold. The establishment in 2011 of the Beaverdams Church Community Centre Board, thus, marks a turning point in realizing the galvanization of more extensive support and fund raising efforts to cover the escalating costs of restoration.
