Join us at www.skeenawild.org SkeenaWild Conservation Trust is a regional initiative working to make the Skeena watershed a global model of ecological and economic sustainability. The Skeena watershed in northwest British Columbia is one of the last remaining large, intact wild salmon ecosystems in the world that is also inhabited by a large hu

man population. For millennia, First Nations people successfully co-existed with the Skeena Watershed and its resources. Since contact, wild salmon have declined significantly, with fewer benefits flowing to local communities. Skeena wild salmon face a myriad of threats: climate change, over-harvesting of weak stocks and oil and gas development. Yet despite these threats, there remains a solid foundation of diverse salmon populations in the Skeena. Currently, government agencies responsible for wild salmon are under enormous pressure from a wide range of interests. Dissatisfaction exists among First Nations, commercial fishers, commercial angling guides, recreational fishermen and other citizens, all of whom are struggling with declining wild salmon runs. In response to these threatened salmon, SkeenaWild Conservation Trust was formed in 2007 with one goal: to make the Skeena Watershed a global model of ecological and economic sustainability.

Wild salmon are so many things! Culture. Food. Economy. Recreation. Art. Inspiration. It’s hard to imagine our home watershed without these life-giving fish. On International Wild Salmon Day, we give thanks and pledge to do everything we can to ensure a strong future for wild salmon here in the Skeena.

Do you love wild salmon too? Drop your favourite wild salmon pic in the comments below, and you could win a SkeenaWild hat!

Like many in our community concerned about water, fish and the future, we have serious questions about the data centre proposed for the Terrace area. We’re heartened to see so many locals raising their voices.

At this stage, nobody has many details. But given the water and energy demands typically associated with AI data centres, it's important we all pay close attention.

Proposals like this deserve careful rigorous assessment and meaningful community involvement from the very start. The fact this proposal is coming forward at a time when the federal government is quietly gutting environmental assessment law raises concerns about whether residents of our watershed will get the process they deserve: https://www.wcel.org/blog/canadas-environmental-safety-net-being-shredded-again

Let's stay vigilant. Healthy salmon and healthy communities go hand in hand, and decisions made today will shape the future of our region for generations to come.

A few weeks have passed since the Salmon Nation Summit, and we’re still reflecting on the energy and connections that came from gathering together.

The Summit brought together Salmon People from across the watershed to share knowledge, strengthen shared values, and build momentum for the future of Skeena Salmon. It had been 10 years since the 2016 Summit, which helped catalyze action to protect critical eelgrass meadows in the Skeena estuary. Coming together again at another pivotal moment for the North Coast felt meaningful and necessary.

The Skeena estuary remains critical nursery habitat for juvenile salmon from every reach of our watershed. As we gathered, we were reminded that protecting salmon requires collaboration, relationship-building, and collective care.

Thank you to everyone who helped create such a hopeful and inspiring space over our two days together. We’re grateful to be part of a growing community united around a future in which wild salmon continue to thrive for generations to come.

As glaciers recede across the Northwest, they’re revealing new salmon habitats. But mining companies are also eager to stake these same places for new mines that could threaten salmon.

Recently, Adrienne Berchtold (Director of Mining Reform and Habitat Protection) and Kirby Muldoe (Director of Community Relations and Partnerships) traveled to Whitehorse to discuss climate resilience in glacial watersheds with experts from across northern B.C., Yukon and Alaska.

They left energized with new ideas for balancing industrial pressures with the need to safeguard these rapidly evolving landscapes. The goal? To give salmon their best chance to thrive amidst the changes to come.

While Carney and Smith are in Alberta this morning scheming about bringing oil tankers to our coast, SkeenaWild and Northern Confluence dropped this new video about ordinary people standing up to protect what they love. Watch and share!

Newmont is running Facebook ads bragging about how strong its tailings dam is at the Red Chris Mine. But is it? What they’re not telling you is their dam has been leaking toxic tailings into the environment for over a decade. SkeenaWild has the full details in our report, which you can find here:https://skeenawild.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/SkeenaWild-Key-Risks-Lessons-Red-Chris-Mine.pdf
