Terrace Search and Rescue

Terrace Search and Rescue Volunteer search and rescue group, based out of Terrace, BC. The
trauma inflicted upon indigenous children and communities continues to
reverberate to this day.

As members of Terrace Search and Rescue (TSAR) we acknowledge that
our search tasks, training, and meetings take place on the ancestral lands
and traditional territories of the Sm’algygx speaking peoples of
Kitsumkalum and Kitselas, belonging to the Laxyuubm Ts’msyen
(Tsimshian Nation). TSAR members are mindful of the land's history, particularly the
significance of the Highway 16 corridor that in

tersects it. This ‘Highway of
Tears’ is a stark reminder of the ongoing systemic racism, violence and
injustices faced by First Nations communities. We also recognize the
legacy of residential schools, day schools and sanatoriums (hospitals) in
the Northwest area, which were part of a larger system of assimilation and
cultural genocide inflicted upon First Nations peoples across Canada. We honor the enduring stewardship since time immemorial of the
Tsimshian people over these lands and waterways. Our commitment lies in
learning from indigenous wisdom and viewpoints, and actively fostering
reconciliation and healing through meaningful action. As we engage in our search and rescue operations and training activities,
we do so with respect for the Kitsumkalum and Kitselas Laxyuup. We also
humbly recognize that our pursuits extend onto the sacred and ancestral
lands of the Nisga’a, Haisla, and Gitxsan Nations. We endeavor to learn, listen, and act in alignment with the Truth and
Reconciliation Commission's calls to action (TRC) and the agreement
between BCSARA and FNHA, which delineates specific steps aligned with
the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
(UNDRIP).

A big thank you to PEAK4RATION (Gohike Outdoor Shop) for donating high-energy ration bars to Terrace Search and Rescue!

Thanks to an opportunity shared through the British Columbia Search and Rescue Association, we were fortunate to receive multiple cases to support our team during training and operations.

These bars are designed for emergency and outdoor use, offering reliable, compact energy with a long shelf life (up to 20 years!), and no preservatives—an excellent addition to SAR and emergency kits.

Donations like this directly support our members in the field, helping ensure we’re fueled and ready to respond in challenging conditions.

We truly appreciate the support—thank you for thinking of SAR teams across BC!

🌙❄️ Nighttime Winter SAR Training in Action ❄️🌙

Terrace Search and Rescue recently conducted a nighttime winter ground-based response exercise at Onion Lake Ski Trails (Snow Valley Nordic Ski Club).

Team members used snowmobiles, a tracked side-by-side, and e-bikes to search for and locate mock injured/lost skiers. These exercises help ensure our team is ready to respond quickly and safely when it matters most.

This training showcased new equipment acquired in 2025, including snowmobiles and e-bikes, which significantly enhance our ability to operate in different types of terrain more efficiently.

The team also trained with their NEW Mountain Top Repeater, a permanent installation on Copper Mountain. Over the past year, TSAR worked closely with Coast Mountain Wireless to bring this repeater online, greatly improving radio communications and coverage for SAR operations in the area.

Funding for the new equipment was generously provided by BC Community Gaming Grants. We’re incredibly grateful for this support. We would also like to thank Snow Valley Nordic Ski Club for the use of their facilities during this exercise.

🎥 Check out the training in action here: https://youtu.be/4FPcSi59tN0

Stay tuned for continued updates from Terrace SAR and their equipment in action!

Was a great opportunity to get the gear out for a night of testing. Worked with the new repeater, new sleds and the Polaris Ranger.

Some recent highlights from Terrace Search and Rescue 👇

🧗 Rope Rescue Training
Our Rope Rescue Team has been training in low-light conditions, building and operating systems using headlamps and scene lighting. These sessions focus on low-angle rope rescue scenarios and preparing members to work safely, efficiently, and confidently when visibility is limited—because SAR calls don’t wait for daylight.

❄️ Winter Response Call-Out
On Saturday, our Winter Response Team was training at Trapper Mountain when they were called out to assist an injured snowmobiler on Mount Treston. With a 4:00 pm sunset and limited helicopter flight time, every minute counted. Huge thanks to the snowmobilers on scene who packed a trail and kept a fire going, and to Yellowhead Helicopters for their continued support.

🎖️ Years of Service & Training Milestones
The day wrapped up by recognizing members with 5, 10, and 25 years of service, along with certificates for our Members in Training who recently completed their Ground Search and Rescue training. Congratulations to all, and thank you for your commitment and dedication!

Winter is here—stay safe and adventure smart!
