HAPPY THANKSGIVING from The Llama Sanctuary!

It was another beautiful British Columbian day yesterday and the llamas were busy being thankful for another bumper crop of carrots and apples. Visitors galore descended on The Llama Sanctuary and that filled our hearts with gratitude, for every visitor makes a difference to hay on the table for every woolly resident. We have so much to be grateful for: hay-makers, bean-rakers, carrot-merchants, fuel suppliers, couriers and warm blankets. Lynne and I are blessed to have been provided with this opportunity to live with and learn from llamas and every smiling face and compassionate heaert that comes through the gates.

Thank you everybody! Thank you!

We're still open! https://llamasanctuary.com

You have to love their unique and often cheeky personalities! Well you don't HAVE to, but if you didn't, it's unlikely that you would be reading this. It's possibly the most frequent statement we hear from visitors who have never met or personally interacted with llamas before. Every species of animal might receive a similar acclaim from the people who spend considerable time with them and who care for them. It shouldn't really be a surprise, since every tree, every cloud and every single snowflake is unique. That is the remit for the Universal Creator. As a species, we have become so wrapped up in ourselves trying to be like someone else that we've forgotten that we're meant to be different.

Where am I going with this? The Llama Sanctuary is open EVERY day and October is a beautiful time to surround yourself with cuddly camelids and celebrate their unique personalities.

HELP! -= Gemmy and Harry know how to share.

We’d love a little help from our Facebook friends to do the same!

When you see one of our posts, please hit Share. It takes just a second, costs nothing, and helps introduce The Llama Sanctuary — and the animals who call it home — to people we could never reach on our own.

If you care, please share whenever we post.🦙❤️

Gemmy & Harry thank you!

LOOKOUT LLAMA and her sidekick alpaca. PeeGee and Harry stand atop Twizzle's Hill and scan the horizon for carrots and cuddles. It's the first of October and the pickings are often slim at this time of year. But this is the time of year when the curtains twitch as local residents peer out into the world and make sure the children are back in school and ascertain that enough of the tourists have returned home to clear the roads sufficiently for a trip to The Llama Sanctuary. The roads are clear folks and The Sanctuary is open! And the llamas are always here with their bouffants and begging bowls ready to provide some Autumn cheer to all who might come by.

TALLEST LLAMA WINS - millions of years ago, a kind of llama roamed the land mass known now as North America, that was as tall as a giraffe. Ever since that time, llamas have wanted to be taller. They will wave their noses in the air to be the tallest; they will stand on grassy knolls and even ant hills in order to appear taller than their colleagues and they can even walk around on their hind legs for a long time ...just to appear taller than anyone else. The tallest llama wins the contest, whether it's for food, attention or especially girls!

Tall is good, even if you're actually smaller than your average llama, like Gabriel, who is doing his very best to attract the attention of new girl on the block - PeeGee. Or maybe he was just after a carrot?

We have fallen a long way short of our winter feed fundraising target for this winter. We still haven't bought all of our hay yet. If you could chip in $5, $20 or even $50 it would help. I mean REALLY help. I'm not very good at banging the gong and asking for money, so I keep telling myself 'it's just energy in a different form'. https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/donation-form/fill-the-hayloft--2026

I posted a story in July about Thoreau arriving for his breakfast with a punctured eye. The vet wanted to remove the eye, but we chose the less dramatic option, to give eyedrops 4 times a day. Thoreau understood and accepted the routine and made a complete recovery. A couple of weeks after being given the all-clear, he punctured the other eye! WHAT? Same eyedrops, same routine. This time he also scratched the lens, so no doubt his vision will be strange, but he can see. And the cause of the damage? A giant thistle! ... which has been removed.

Thoreau still waits at the gate everyday for his breakfast and dinner. He arrived at The Sanctuary more than 6 years ago without any molars and he cannot eat hay. He loves his beetpulp and grain mash and a scoop of finely ground hay cubes. Arthritis in the neck also makes stooping difficult, so we hang his buckets from the fence.

He trusts me enough to put drops in his eyes, but he still doesn't like visitors or carrots!

The rest of them do and this weather is perfect for some fun with the llamas with our Guided Tours

SUSPICION - Pema always manages to have a suspicious look in his eye! But that really sums up his character. He is ready to release a massive reaction in an instant. Pema absolutely freaks out if he's cornered or feels trapped. He missed out on shearing again this year when adrenaline over-ruled sedation and he almost destroyed the catch-pen and punched a hole in the wall of the hair salon! It's not all cuddles and carrots at The Llama Sanctuary. Pema is not a llama to mess around with. Sometimes, we have to deal with really wild or terrified animals and they can do some serious damage or injury if not handled correctly!

However, if you come along with a bucket of carrots, he'll be at the front of the queue with a sweet smile for visitors!

It's still a good time or guided tours! https://llamasanctuary.com

THE GATHERING DANCE - there was a brief moment yesterday that was both magical and sad. Hundreds of swallows gathered at The Llama Sanctuary and put on a fabulous display of fly-catching aerobatics. They were performing the great 'Gathering Dance', encouraging other swallows from the local area to join them in mass migration. The swallows swooped and danced for several hours and then in a single, undefinable moment, they were gone. The sky was silent, the trees were still and all you could hear was the sound of munching llamas. They were unmoved by the scene, but to us Twolegs, it indicates the end of another summer, longer nights and time once more to ensure the barns and hayloft are filled with feed for another winter.

But just because the kids have gone back to school and the swallows have flown south, Guided Tours are still available! Book your guided tour at https://llamasanctuary.com
