Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot people) refer to yesterday's full moon as Iitamatapapittssko, meaning “when leaves change colour”.

It is pronounced: EE-Dom-Ma-Da-ba-Bits-Go.

We thank the Piikani and Kainai Knowledge Keepers for sharing Niitsipowahsin (Blackfoot language) with us, including pronunciations, phonetic spellings and translations.

Parks Canada fosters partnerships with local Indigenous Peoples. We value the continued stewardship, knowledge-sharing, culture, and history shared with this sacred place.

Today, we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day! Held on the summer solstice, this day recognizes and honours the cultures, languages, knowledge, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Turtle Island.

It is a time to celebrate the strength, wisdom, and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, while also reflecting on the relationships we are called to build through respect, understanding, and reconciliation.

At the Moose Hide Campaign, we are grateful for the teachings, leadership, and community that continue to guide this movement. We recognize that creating a future free from violence begins with listening, learning, and walking together in a good way.

Whether you are attending a community gathering, learning from Indigenous voices, connecting with the land, or spending time with family and community, we encourage you to take a moment today to celebrate and honour the rich diversity of Indigenous cultures and traditions.
