Polish Village Hall

Member of Parliament Mike Kelloway -- and representatives of organizations in Sydney-Glace Bay -- were at the Polish Village Hall yesterday for an important Government of Canada funding announcement, impacting several organizations in our region, that work with seniors. Our supported project will involve building a suitable, safe storage and display room to preserve traditional Polish costumes and hosting a series of seniors’ community cafes (reaching out to the broader community) to show and use some of the costumes. Some of our guests yesterday were in the hall for the first time and were impressed by the welcoming facility, cultural exhibits, children’s museum and the way we warmly share our culture and language with others.

Our Society is helping to organize this free activity for May 26th, which is Mother’s Day in Poland. It will take place at St Mary’s Polish Church at 6 pm.

Tuesday, May 26, is Mother's Day in Poland. We will have a Polish-themed craft and gift-making evening at 6 p.m. on May 26, with food and refreshments. It will be a fun children's and family gathering. Welcome! Zapraszamy!

Our Society has been an active partner in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s sister-city agreement with the City of Wałbrzych, Poland. On Friday, May 15, at 11:45 am, Prof. Tom Urbaniak (who serves as our Society’s president) will host a talk, informal discussion and light lunch on “101 Practical Ideas from Our Polish Sister City.” Tom will also read related excerpts from his new book Conscience and Community: A Citizen’s Reader. This will happen at Cape Breton University, Room CC-262 (one floor above the cafeteria). Welcome!

Thank you for a beautiful Polish puppet show and Easter brunch yesterday (April 26). We started our celebrations of the upcoming Polish May 3rd holiday with a fun, participatory Cape Breton version of The Legend of the Wawel Dragon! People at every table learned lines in Polish and made puppets! We had songs and a real sense of community. Gratulacje!

Cape Breton's Polish community is working with the IWK Foundation to support and help develop a Polish option for the Nova Scotia "Read to Me!" program -- book-gifting program for babies born anywhere in Nova Scotia. We'll be introducing this, and discussing our work to date, at a cultural/Easter potluck on the afternoon of Sunday, April 26.
