For 2026, our YMCA of Cape Breton is focusing Peace Medal nominations on youth ages 15–30.

Across Cape Breton, young people are stepping forward as leaders, advocates, volunteers, mentors and community-builders. They are creating spaces where others feel welcome, speaking up for positive change, bringing people together and inspiring their peers to take action.

📩We want to recognize them. Nominate a Peacemaker in our community today: https://shorturl.at/lPYSS

🌐YMCA Peace Week is a time when we celebrate the presence of peace in our communities, and reflect on the peace-building work that happens all year both inside and outside the YMCA.

As part of YMCA Peace Week, YMCAs across Canada present the YMCA Peace Medal to individuals or groups who, without any special resources, status, wealth or position, demonstrate a commitment to the values of P-E-A-C-E through contributions made within their local, national, or global community.

🌟 Senior Week Member Spotlight: Ed & Joe Anne Devereaux

When Ed retired in 2021, a hip injury led him to the YMCA in search of a way to stay active while waiting for surgery. What started with lane swimming quickly turned into a love for Aqua Fit, helping him stay strong, recover successfully from hip replacement surgery, and regain his health. Today, he has fully recovered and lost more than 40 pounds.

Inspired by Ed's experience, Joe Anne joined Aqua Fit after retirement and saw significant improvements in her mobility and overall well-being. Together, they attend classes 4-5 times a week and have built lasting friendships through the YMCA community.

For Ed, the Y also became an opportunity to give back. After helping with Aqua Fit classes, he went on to become a certified Aquatic Fitness Instructor.
"I saw a strong sense of community and learned the true value of volunteerism from people who wanted to make their communities stronger. From that, I developed a desire to give back whenever the opportunity arose." – Ed

Today, Ed and Joe Anne are living proof that retirement can be a time for new friendships, better health, and new opportunities. We're proud to celebrate them during Senior Week and thank them for being such valued members of our YMCA family. 💙

🌟 YMCA Senior Week Spotlight: Brenda
October 5-9, 2026

Finding Strength, Friendship, and Community at our Y

Nine years ago, Brenda walked through the doors of the YMCA during a difficult chapter in her life. While supporting her mother through serious health challenges, Brenda's son gave her a YMCA membership pass, encouraging her to take some time for herself and focus on her own well-being.
What began as a simple way to step away from life's stresses soon became so much more.
Over the years, Brenda has found the YMCA to be a place of support, friendship, and belonging. Whether she's on the pickleball court, participating in Group Active classes, or enjoying conversations with fellow members, she has discovered a community that truly cares for one another.
"The Y gave me a place where I could focus on myself while surrounded by positive people," Brenda shares. "The friendships I've built here have meant so much to me."
Today, Brenda is known by many as one of the YMCA's true social butterflies. Her warm smile, caring nature, and genuine interest in others help create a welcoming atmosphere wherever she goes. New members often find a friendly face and encouraging words in Brenda, making it easier for them to feel comfortable and connected.
Through her pickleball group and Group Active friends, Brenda has built lasting relationships and found a support network that extends beyond fitness. Like so many at the YMCA, she believes that staying active is important, but it's the people and connections that make the experience truly special.
Brenda's kindness and willingness to reach out to others embody what the YMCA is all about. She is always there with encouragement, a listening ear, or a friendly conversation, helping fellow members feel valued and included.

For anyone thinking about joining the YMCA, Brenda would encourage them to take that first step. You may come for the fitness, but you'll stay for the community.

As we celebrate YMCA Senior Week, October 5-9, we are proud to recognize Brenda Brown for the positivity, compassion, and sense of belonging she brings to our YMCA family every day.
