Today ACAP Cape Breton summer interns spent the day at the Middle Lake Well field. Underneath this beautiful forest is the groundwater source supplying drinking water for the greater Sydney area.

Interns learned about the source water protection, habitat assessments, and biodiversity monitoring. We deployed autonomous recording units (ARUs) which will document bird song and bat vocalizations, and provide important information about forest biodiversity and species at risk. We also installed water level loggers in the stream (second photo) which will provide level and temperature data throughout the season.

It was a chilly June 1st, but worth it.🌳💧
Thanks so much to the CBRM Watershed Coordinator Nicholas and intern Breton for joining us!

Salix discolor, or P***y willow, is one of the first trees to bloom in spring. This footage is from the first warm day this year and it’s a hum with insects enjoying the first flowers of the season.

These insects are pollinating the willow, playing their role in willow reproduction. Accessing nutrients early will be good for their own population’s success, too, which is good news for this whole ecosystem like all the plants that require pollinators, and the birds who snack on them.

So few flowers bloom in the first warm days in spring. We plant a diversity of species at our adopt a forest sites to help fill the gaps between good snack access and facilitate support of the ecosystem-as-a-whole. Check out more about our guiding principles to see if we’re doing something you’d like to support.

From cryptic moths that blend into bark and leaves like Curve toothed Geometer, Two lined Hooktip, and Sigmoid Prominent, to larger showy species like Cecropia, Rosy Maple, and White fringed Emerald, there is incredible diversity to discover. You may also spot unique species such as Harris Three spot, Scrollwork Pyralid, Small eyed Sphinx, and Yarrow Plume Moth.

This is a rare opportunity to experience Cape Breton’s nighttime biodiversity up close in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

Over the last two weekends, ACAP staff and Riparian Zone Ready youth volunteers pulled out 1,197 lbs (548.2 kgs) of trash out of a wetland near the Wash Brook in Sydney.

There's still a lot more work to do, but we're so grateful to the volunteers who spent their Sunday morning in the muck and cattails, hauling out degraded plastic, tires, old rugs and more.

We timed this clean-up to avoid bird nesting season and limit disturbance to the local ecosystem. (It also happened to coincide with the )
