The Andrew MacKinnon Memorial Skatepark is getting a major rebuild that will create a safer, more durable and modern recreation space for skateboarders, scooter riders and other users in the community.
Mike Kelloway, Member of Parliament for Sydney-Glace Bay, announced federal support today for the Island Skatepark Association to renovate and rebuild the long-standing Sydney skatepark.
The project will replace the aging asphalt-based park with a reinforced-concrete, all-wheeled facility designed for users of varying ages, abilities and skill levels.
Work will include demolition of the existing park, earthwork and grading, concrete formwork, steel and rebar installation, construction of new obstacles and riding surfaces, finishing, landscaping and site cleanup.
The existing park has deteriorated significantly over time as a result of Cape Breton’s freeze-thaw cycles, creating gaps and damaged surfaces that pose safety concerns for users.
The rebuilt park will use reinforced concrete throughout, with ramp features tied into flat surfaces using steel rebar dowels to improve durability and help protect the facility from future weather-related damage.
The design takes inspiration from the original park and was developed in consultation with local riders, helping ensure the rebuilt space reflects the needs of the people who use it.
Once complete, the park will continue to provide a home for free learn-to-skate programming, community events, contests, demonstrations and events such as the Scotia Sk8 Tour.
For people who may not participate in traditional team sports, the park provides another way to be active, develop skills and connect with others.
The project will help ensure that one of Cape Breton Island’s longest-standing and most-used skateparks remains an important community recreation space for years to come.
