Lumière Cape Breton Lumière is an art-at-night festival bringing contemporary art to unconventional spaces. September 24-26th, 2026.

Now 15 years in the making, Lumière is a volunteer-run non-profit festival that celebrates and elevates our local art scene through a curated program of digital, theatre, multimedia, visual arts, fine craft, and installation works for audiences from Unama’ki-Cape Breton and Canada to enjoy. Lumière partners artists with unconventional indoor, outdoor, and virtual spaces in downtown Sydney and Cape Breton Island to create a unique cultural experience.

What a beautiful installation by artist Kristi Farrier at !

Unfolding: Root to Tip, by artist Kristi Farrier, features the marvellous transformation of flax seed to plant.

When planted, flax seeds wait for the right conditions to begin their incredible metamorphosis, emerging from the soil to grow upward to the light with their stalks and flowers while at the same time reaching down into the dark, damp, earth with their anchoring roots.

Combining, larger than life, handmade paper replica flax plants with stop motion images of the growth process, Kristi’s installation overlayed the daily nuances of light and weather on the shifting colours of the flax field through its transformation from seed to mature plant ready for harvest.

The installation explores the amazing power of life held in a tiny seed and suggests how we can all flourish when in the right environment.
