Breton Ability Centre supports individuals of varying abilities in achieving their greatest potential to enable their inclusion and contributions within their community. Working in collaboration with our partners and stakeholders, Breton Ability Centre has made a significant shift in its model – away from the medical model of the past toward a person-centred model that creates a customized plan for each resident based on their needs and their abilities.

Breton Ability is now accepting applications for the HomeShare program. Help create a home built on choice, belonging, and community.

Breton Ability is recruiting prospective HomeShare Providers throughout Cape Breton. HomeShare is a voluntary, person-directed option where an adult receiving support through the Nova Scotia Disability Support Program and an approved provider share a home. A participant may move into the provider’s home, or the provider may move into the participant’s home.

Every arrangement is different. The participant’s preferences, routines, identity, relationships, goals and agreed support needs guide the match. A HomeShare arrangement moves forward only when the participant and provider both make an informed and voluntary decision.

What a fun day at Breton Ability’s Fall Fair.

Our participants had a great time playing carnival games, winning prizes, and enjoying treats from the poutine bar and sundae station!

Jackie Hardy and Celtic Witches of the Cape put on great live shows that had everyone smiling, dancing, and cheering!

Our participants had a great time playing pool this week!

Our staff were right there with them. They helped line up shots, gave tips, and cheered every time a ball dropped in. There was a lot of laughing and good company.

Thank you to our staff for always being there to support and have fun with the people we serve.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

Today, we’re celebrating the skills, talents, and hard work of our participants at the The Ability Collective, Bottle Depot, Abiliteas, Janice’s Boutique, and Print Shop.

A big thank you to our amazing staff who help participants learn new skills, build confidence, and reach their goals every day!

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Breton Ability!

Today we are thankful for the people we support, who fill our days with laughter and show us what is possible. We are thankful for our staff, who show up with heart every day. And we are thankful for our families, volunteers, and community members who help make Cape Breton a place where everyone belongs.

We hope your day is full of good food, good company, and lots to be thankful for.

A new face is waiting to say hello at McCurdy Sydney Airport!

Breton Ability, McCurdy Sydney Airport, and Cape Breton University have teamed up to start The First Hello. It gives people with disabilities paid jobs in Cape Breton’s tourism industry.

It is great timing, too! The launch comes during Disability Employment Awareness Month and just in time for Celtic Colours International Festival. Our greeters are welcoming visitors, helping them find their way, and sharing fun facts about Cape Breton. They are also earning a paycheque, learning new skills, and meeting people from all over the world.

Visitors landing in Cape Breton for Celtic Colours will get a warm welcome this week!

Breton Ability, McCurdy Sydney Airport, and Cape Breton University have teamed up to start The First Hello. It is a new program that creates paid jobs for people with disabilities in Cape Breton's tourism sector.

First Hello Greeters are now at the airport. They welcome travelers, answer questions, help with directions, and share tips about Cape Breton. They are earning a paycheque, building skills, and meeting people from all over the world.

This launch is happening during Disability Employment Awareness Month. It shows what can happen when employers look at what people can do and make room for them to shine.

Rainy weather did not stop the fun!

Our participants had a wonderful camping trip to Two Rivers Wildlife Park. They explored the trails, visited the animals, shared meals, and enjoyed lots of time together.
