Proud of her many accomplishments in service to Canada.

Major (Retired) Lynn Doucette is an inspiring Canadian Veteran whose 35-year career in the Air Force helped open doors for many women who followed.

Growing up in Ingonish Beach, Nova Scotia, Lynn first dreamed of joining the RCMP, but a height rule kept her from that path. Instead of giving up, she chose a new direction and joined the military in 1979.

She worked hard, earning the Commandant’s Shield as the top female recruit in her basic training class. Lynn went on to train as an air weapons controller, guiding fighter pilots during their missions. Her leadership was recognized as she rose to the rank of Major in only eight years. She served across Canada and the United States, including Montana and Alaska, and later trained on AWACS aircraft, large command-and-control planes used to track activity in the air and on the ground. All of this was instrumental to ensuring air dominance during the Persian Gulf War.

During the Gulf War, Lynn became the first female Canadian mission crew commander on an American AWACS aircraft while deployed to Turkey in 1991. Her trailblazing career reminds us how determination and service can shape history.

Today, we honour Major Lynn Doucette for her courage, leadership, and dedication to defending Canada and supporting our allies.

Cecil John Kinross VC: The Lone Charge at Passchendaele
On October 30, 1917, Private Cecil Kinross did something almost unthinkable—he charged a German machine gun nest. Alone. In broad daylight. Across open ground.
Born in England and raised on an Alberta farm, Kinross joined the 49th Infantry Battalion at the war’s beginning when he was barely 20 years old. He’d already been wounded once and returned to fight. But nothing could prepare his company for what he’d do at Passchendaele.
When German machine gun fire pinned down his unit, Kinross calmly assessed the situation, stripped off all his equipment except his rifle and ammunition, and simply went for it. He killed all six crew members and destroyed the gun. His company, inspired by this incredible act of courage, advanced 300 meters.
Three hundred meters. In a war where advances were measured in feet and inches—where tens of thousands died for a few yards of mud—this was extraordinary.
The action earned Kinross the Victoria Cross. It also wounded him so severely he never returned to front-line duty. In a bitter irony, the wound that ended his war may have saved his life—and the lives of German soldiers he never had to face again.
He survived until 1957, and a mountain near Jasper, Alberta, bears his name.
Sometimes one person’s courage really can change everything.

The resilience of the Ukrainian people is amazing. My heart goes out to them in their struggle to save their country from the rath of Putin.

Fascinating story, similar histories in some of the Cape Breton coal mining areas.
