Cette nouvelle remontée dans le temps propose un arrêt au 7, rue Principale Sud, une vitrine commerciale qui dessert la population de Sutton depuis près de 150 ans. La visite se poursuit le long du chemin Spencer à la rencontre des familles qui l’ont habité et ont créé une petite communauté dynamique aux 19e et 20e siècles.

Les regards sont ensuite dirigés sur Bert Amos, un home boy accueilli par la famille Willey, et connu de tous pour avoir livré le courrier pendant 25 ans à Abercorn. Le dernier texte enfin s’intéresse à l’importance économique de la fourrure dans l’histoire de l’Amérique et dans la vie des colons. Et, pur coïncidence, les articles sur Bert Amos et sur le chemin Spencer font tout deux référence à la pratique de la trappe sur les fermes.

This new journey back in time includes a stop at 7 Principale Street South, a storefront that has served the people of Sutton for nearly 150 years. The tour continues with a visit to Spencer Road to meet some families who lived there and built a small, vibrant community in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Spencer Road theme is echoed in a biography of Bert Amos, a Home Boy from England employed by the Willey family who’d go on to win his claim to fame through a 25-year-long tenure as Abercorn’s trusty mailman. Finally, the last section explores the economic importance of fur in North American history and in the lives of the settlers. Coincidentally, the Spencer Road and Bert Amos articles both mention trapping, reflecting the commonplace nature of this practice in rural life.

HÉRITAGE SUTTON PUBLIE UN 43e CAHIER D'HISTOIRE

Dans ce nouveau cahier, Paul Kinnis et Anne Lipowski nous présentent quelques-uns des habitants du chemin Westwood au XIXᵉ siècle ; leur texte illustre différents schémas d’implantation à Sutton et partage des informations sur les principales ressources utilisées pour mener à bien les recherches.

Un deuxième article retrace le parcours de la famille Madden-Eland, aujourd’hui bien implantée à Sutton. N’eût été de plusieurs rencontres fortuites, sa destination aurait pu être tout autre, raconte Katherine Madden-Eland dans une entrevue réalisée dans le cadre du projet d’histoire orale.

Pour sa part, Jocelyn Vachon s’est intéressé au destin tragique d’Arthur Bowker McElroy, qui a combattu les Allemands aux commandes d’un avion durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Malgré une solide formation et de nombreuses heures de vol, il a disparu sans laisser aucune trace lors d’une mission en mars 1945, plongeant une famille de Sutton dans le deuil.

Enfin, grâce à un partenariat entre Héritage Sutton et l’École d’art, une douzaine d’enfants de 6 à 9 ans ont participé à l’été 2025 à un atelier de découverte du patrimoine bâti. Le dernier article rend compte de cette expérience.

HERITAGE SUTTON PUBLISHES ITS 43rd HISTORY BOOKLET

In this new booklet, Paul Kinnis and Anne Lipowski present several residents of Westwood Road in the 19th century; their text illustrates different settlement patterns in Sutton and shares information on the main sources used to carry out the research.

A second article traces the journey of the Madden-Eland family, now well established in Sutton. If it hadn’t been for several chance encounters, their destination might have been quite different, explains Katherine Madden-Eland in an interview conducted as part of the oral history project.

For his part, Jocelyn Vachon became interested in the tragic fate of Arthur Bowker McElroy, who fought the Germans as the pilot of an aircraft during the Second World War. Despite solid training and many hours of flight time, he disappeared without a trace during a mission in March 1945, plunging a Sutton family into mourning.

Finally, thanks to a partnership between Héritage Sutton and the School of Art, about a dozen children aged 6 to 9 that took part in a built-heritage discovery workshop in the summer of 2025. The final article reports on this experience.
