The Basics of Installing Linoleum
with Danny Lavallie, Manager of Technical Support Canada, Forbo Flooring Systems

Wednesday, October 14th @ 4pm EST (2pm MDT, 1pm PST)

Installing linoleum flooring is both a technical craft and an exercise in understanding a uniquely natural material.

In this webinar, Danny will guide participants through the essential stages of a successful installation – from evaluating site conditions and preparing the substrate to managing adhesive open time, fitting the material accurately, and executing strong, durable seams.

Each phase plays a critical role in ensuring long-term performance.

Danny will break down the practical steps, common pitfalls, and quality benchmarks that define industry-standard workmanship.

Unlike PVC or rubber flooring, linoleum is a bio-based product made from flax seed oil, rosin binders, wood flour, limestone, and dry pigments which are mixed and then calendared onto a natural jute backing.

Throughout the session, Danny will highlight these distinctions and explain how to work with linoleum’s unique properties to achieve a high-performing installation.

By the end of the session, attendees will have a better understanding of both the fundamentals and nuances that set linoleum apart in the commercial flooring landscape.

As the saying goes ‘carpet covers a multitude of (subfloor sins).

But the same cannot be said for vinyl, laminate, hardwood, and in this case, SPC (Stone Polymer Composite), Luxury Vinyl Plank.

Imperfections in substrates must be corrected using purpose-made materials because thin floor covering products, installed over non flat, unstable, improperly prepared surfaces can separate, break at the joints, lift, present tripping hazards, squeak, creak and of course, create unhappy clients.

It should go without saying, Carpet is not to be used to fill voids or serve as underlayment.

Quality installers understand this.

Companies with good reputations set up and prepare to address such issues with clients upfront and in good faith.

Estimators must have the difficult conversation around extra costs for preparation.

Time and materials is a fair and equitable way of reaching agreement prior to starting surface preparation work that cannot be seen or quantified/priced until old flooring has been removed and a full assessment of the substrate is done.

What good is the best written Architectural Specification in the world if it's ignored on site?

The nature of fast-track construction combined with installing complex floor covering systems presents many challenges that tests even the best collaborative efforts.

There’s much more to consider than just the final product. Flooring systems can involve the work of multiple trade contractors and a variety of products and procedures.

Demolition, contaminant removal, surface preparation, moisture barriers, primers, levellers, adhesives, and flooring products need to work together.

If not carefully managed, the race to the deadline often results in missing, short-cutting or ignoring critical aspects of the work, leaving the building owner with floor coverings that underperform and/or fail altogether.

The NFCA Quality Assurance Program (QAP), third party floor inspection service supports construction teams with independent expert reporting through a project from beginning to end, addressing the issues, and preventing the problems.

We do it to ourselves.

Multiple projects recently, all challenged with the same issue. What’s the solution?

Time and time again we see constructors and architects pitched against each other having used thin (approximately 2”) concrete toppings over compressible acoustic matting over a wooden subfloor, trying to figure out why the concrete cracked throughout causing the need for expensive repairs.

Was it a design flaw? Installation error? A product failure? Maybe use and abuse during construction?

Then the flooring installer arrives on site to begin work and has no choice but to reject the substrate due to cracking, instability, unevenness, and a host of other related issues.

Now the deep dive into possible solutions enters the conversation - not just the high costs but also the time required to fill the multiple cracks that have developed and then pour hydraulic cement over top to tie everything together and provide a smooth surface ready for a glue down resilient floor covering. All this while still meeting the construction deadline.

Stress.

Isn’t the risk that a ridged material such as 2” concrete with no reinforcement and questionable flexural strength, placed over a suspended wooden subfloor and a compressible matting, a roll of the dice?

Of course there will be movement; bounce, deflection, vibration that will stress the whole system, especially during the construction process where live rolling loads, stacks of drywall and so on can deliver thousands of pounds of weight.
