To conquer loose-leash walking, we need to take it one step at a time, and the very first one is the equipment you use.

Maren Bruun of Paw In Hand shares these three essentials to enjoying a loose-leash walk with your dog.

1️⃣Well-fitted harness: that is comfortable for the dog to wear.
2️⃣Long leash: Remember that it is important that you can safely and effectively handle it.
3️⃣Treat pouch with lots of treats: because there are plenty of things that compete for your attention!

We talk all about loose-leash walking at https://animalkind.ca/all-about-leash-walking/

*URGENT NEED for donations of dry and wet cat and dog food *

Calling all animal lovers in our community! Right now, there are beloved pets going to sleep with empty bowls, and the families who love them are doing everything they can to make ends meet. Through our Pet Food Bank Program, we help make sure no pet is left behind simply because times are tough… but we can’t do it without you.

We are urgently looking for donations of dry and wet cat and dog food to help support hungry pets right here in our community. Every bag or can you give goes directly back into the community, helping families keep their cherished companions fed, comforted, and at home where they belong.
Your kindness reaches far beyond one animal.

These donations support:
• Local pet food bank events
• Community partners like food banks
• Supportive housing programs
• Family and women’s centres

HOW?
Option 1: Drop off pet food at the BC SPCA Surrey Location during business hours (16748 50th Ave, Surrey BC).

Option 2: Shop our online wishlist and have donations sent directly to us: https://www.amazon.ca/hz/wishlist/ls/2PNEHOHZ2EXKC?ref_=wl_share

Any brand, any amount, it all matters more than you know.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for showing compassion to the most vulnerable pets in our community. Because of you, tails will keep wagging, purrs will keep humming, and families can stay together through difficult times.

🌿 International Day for Biological Diversity 🐾

Every species, big or small, plays a role in keeping our ecosystems healthy and balanced.

On International Day for Biological Diversity, we’re celebrating the incredible variety of life that surrounds us and the importance of protecting it. From wildlife in our communities to the animals in our care, every life matters. 💙

Biodiversity isn’t just about nature—it’s about connection. When we protect animals and their habitats, we’re helping create a healthier world for everyone.

Even small actions, like respecting wildlife, protecting green spaces, and supporting animal welfare, can make a meaningful difference.

🐶 National Rescue Dog Day 💙

Every rescue dog has a story, and a second chance waiting to be written.

On National Rescue Dog Day, we’re celebrating the incredible resilience, loyalty, and love that rescue dogs bring into our lives. From shy beginnings to joyful tails and trusting hearts, their transformations are truly inspiring. 🐾

By choosing adoption, you’re not just giving a dog a home, you’re giving them a future filled with care, comfort, and belonging.

Thinking about adding a dog to your family? Adoption is a powerful way to make a difference.

🎆 We’re Closed for Victoria Day! 🇨🇦

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Victoria Day long weekend!

Just a reminder that the Surrey BC SPCA is closed to the public today for Victoria Day! If you need to contact us, feel free to email [email protected] or call 604-574-1711, and we’ll get back to you when we reopen.

While you’re enjoying time with family and friends, it’s important to remember that long weekend celebrations, especially fireworks, can be stressful for our animal companions. 🐾

Here are a few simple ways to help keep pets safe and comfortable:

• Keep pets indoors during fireworks

• Create a quiet, secure space for them

• Ensure ID tags and microchips are up to date

A little preparation can make a big difference in keeping animals calm and safe. 💙

From all of us at Surrey BC SPCA, have a fun and pet-friendly long weekend!

🧁 Turn Your Ideas into Impact 🐾

Some animals need more than love.

They need food, medical care, safe shelter, and a second chance.

The good news? You can help make that happen in a way that’s simple and meaningful. 💙

Hosting your own fundraiser, like a bake sale, birthday fundraiser, or community event, can directly support animals in need in our community. Every dollar raised helps provide care, comfort, and hope.

Your cupcakes. Your creativity. Their second chance. It just makes sense. 🧁✨

Start your own fundraiser today and make a real difference for local animals. https://champions.spca.bc.ca/

🌿🐾 Endangered Species Day 🐾🌿

Today, we’re taking a moment to recognize the incredible wildlife that share our planet, and the many species that are currently at risk of disappearing forever. 💚 From tiny pollinators to large mammals, every species plays an important role in keeping ecosystems balanced and thriving.

At the BC SPCA, we believe all animals deserve protection and respect, whether they are domestic or wild. Habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and human activity continue to threaten wildlife populations across BC and beyond. 🌎

Even small actions, like protecting natural spaces, reducing waste, and supporting conservation efforts, can help make a meaningful difference. Together, we can help protect the animals and environments that cannot speak for themselves. ✨

While we were busy caring for the animals, the grass shot up faster than we expected! Para Space Landscaping Inc. swooped in to save the day and got our lawns under control. We are very grateful for James and the team at Para Space for spending the day working on our property.

If anyone is interested in volunteering to help us maintain our lawns throughout the year, check out our Ground Maintenance Volunteer position: https://app.betterimpact.com/PublicEnterprise/EnterpriseSearch?EnterpriseGuid=3daf2b99-02b2-461d-872b-54cc0a82eaf8&SearchType=Organization&SearchId=6989
