Help Care for War Graves in Canada.

Royal Canadian Legion members can help honour the fallen of the Commonwealth by joining the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s National Volunteer Program.

On June 1, the program launched in Quebec and New Brunswick, completing its national footprint. Volunteers are needed in Quebec, New Brunswick, and in rural communities across the country.

CWGC Volunteers visit their assigned war graves in local cemeteries twice a year to
report on their condition, and if needed, perform light cleaning using approved methods. By giving a little of your time, you can help care for war graves and ensure the stories of the fallen are never forgotten.

Banner applications are still open for this year’s Victory Square Banner Program! Anyone can purchase a banner to honour their hero or loved one who served, and banners will be displayed in Vancouver, BC in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day. Banner orders will be on a first come, first served basis and will remain open until June 30, 2026.

In Canada, June is PTSD Awareness Month. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can occur after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event, causing intense fear, helplessness, or horror. While PTSD can affect anyone, military personnel, emergency personnel, rescue workers, first responders, journalists, and families of victims are at higher risk.

The Legion offers a variety of Peer Support Programs for Veterans and their families. The Legion can also refer Veterans and their families to a number of organizations with programs offering supports and services. Today marks a significant moment in history – the end of the South African (Boer) War in 1902.

“More than 7,000 Canadians volunteered for service alongside the British forces there. Our soldiers served with great distinction. Five of them earned the Victoria Cross for their impressive bravery.”

On this day 26 years ago, the Unknown Soldier was transported from Parliament Hill to the National War Memorial, and laid to rest in a sarcophagus directly in front of the War Memorial in Ottawa.

"From that point on, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier became a focal point of commemoration for all memorial events at the National War Memorial... The Tomb is a fitting way to honour the sacrifices on which our freedoms were built.”

This month, the total number of Legion members across Canada surpassed a milestone number of 300,000! The Legion has also welcomed over 82,000 new members across the country this year alone.

This milestone reflects the outstanding efforts of Legion Branches welcoming and engaging their members. Thank you to Branches and membership chairs for all of your hard work and dedication, and thank you to every member, new and returning, for supporting the Legion and its mission.
