Calling all Surrey Youth Orchestra alumni!

Where has your SYO journey taken you? As we celebrate 50 incredible years, we’re reminded of the many stories that began right here…

One of our alumni, Jessy Kim, shares her story with SYO:

"My journey with the Surrey Youth Orchestra began when I was very young, just starting out in the Junior program with my violin. I still remember walking into those early rehearsals feeling both nervous and excited, and being completely drawn in by the sound of the orchestra. There was something so special about being part of something bigger than myself, even at that age.

As I moved through Intermediate and into the Youth Orchestra, it became a place where I truly grew up. What I loved most was playing with my friends. Music became a way for us to communicate beyond words, to share something deeply felt without needing to explain it. It was during this time that I realized this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

That realization stayed with me. I went on to study at the Glenn Gould School and the Yale School of Music, and I am now a member of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra. Looking back, the Youth Orchestra stage felt like a first stepping stone, one that eventually led me to perform on stages like Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall, and many others around the world.

SYO is where everything began for me. It gave me not only a foundation, but also a sense of joy and purpose that continues to guide me. I’m so grateful to have been part of such a meaningful community."

We’d love to hear your story too. Join us for our 50th Anniversary Concert and celebrate together!

"In designing the logo, I wanted to make a strong first impression of both music and the Surrey Youth Orchestra (SYO). To achieve this, I combined the letter 'S' with a treble clef, symbolizing both music and the orchestra. The layout of the letters was intentionally designed to resemble music, effectively creating that first impression. I also bolded 'SYO' and '50' to highlight the significance of the orchestra's 50th anniversary."

- Kate Wang, Piccolo Strings
- Melinda Wu, Intermezzo Strings
- Amelia Lai, Intermezzo Strings
- Floria Hu, Intermediate Orchestra
