Our friends at Gabriola Theatre Centre are hosting a special event to welcome the year of the fire horse on Friday! 🔥🐎

POP-UP! FIRE HORSE and SHADOW, a unique interactive web performance, created by Dream Walker Dance Company. This, Friday, Feb 27 doors 6pm. RSVP-Limited Seating

Scarlet Chen, will lead a post show Q & A, followed by the ceremonial burning of the Giant Dumpling. The Giant Dumpling metaphorically represents and holds the connection to home, intergenerational sharing, dim sum food and stories. In the dance piece Fire & Horse and Shadow, the Giant Dumpling represents the “sealed and contained silence” that emanates through the matrilineal lines of story-gathering that took place in the process of creating movement, shadow and choreography for this project.
The Giant Dumpling is offered as a safe and sacred place to contain the stories and life experiences that have yet found a voice. They will be a place to make a wish or hold a private grief, sincere wish for future joyful and free expression. Your stories are anonymous. Nobody will open and read your paper. All secrets and the Giant Dumpling will be ceremonially burned outdoors at the end of the evening.

Fire Horse and Shadow is a feature length web performance experience created and produced in 2021. This work traces the bold and inspiring experiences lived and felt by four generations of Chinese Canadian women growing up in what is now known as Vancouver, British Columbia (MST Territory). Against a backdrop of cultural influences, gender inequality, and anti-Chinese racism, creators Andrea Nann and shadow painter and puppeteer Annie Katsura Rollins weave together passages of remembering and forgetting. This unique interactive web-performance was created during the depths of isolation in 2020 and originally released in 2021.

我非常感謝能夠受邀參與看嘸舞蹈劇場首屆「2025 出櫃藝術節 嘉義舞蹈雙週」，成為這個為期十天、跨國交流且充滿啟發性的節目一份子，是一段獨特而美好的經驗。在這裡，來自不同背景的個體每天透過身體實踐，一起探索與土地、身體智慧、精神性以及自身生命經驗之間的連結。
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in KuaBo Dance Theatre’s inaugural Come Out Festival 2025. It was a unique and marvellous experience to be part of this inspiring ten-day international exchange, where individuals from diverse backgrounds gathered each day to explore—through embodied practices—how we connect to Land, to the wisdom of the body, to spirit, and to our own lived experiences.

我們一起進入了多層次的內在世界與外在世界，帶著專注、遊戲感與真誠，彼此相遇在關於性別認同、性別政治、性機制、以及感官覺知的探索之中。
Together, we entered into relationship with the many layers of our inner selves and the selves we offer to the world, meeting one another in explorations of gender identity, gender politics, sexuality, and sensory awareness with focused intention, playfulness and sincerity.

透過一起活動與互動，我們發現了新的身體方式，讓我們能以個體的姿態，同時作為群體的一份子去存在與理解自己。我們用內心、用皮膚、用骨頭、用呼吸在聆聽，在逐漸生成的集體活力之中找到各自的好奇與驚奇；我們慶祝彼此差異，跨越年齡、背景、語言與地域的距離，在藝術探索與自我發現的層層漣漪中找到彼此的共鳴與喜悅。
Through moving together and interacting we discovered new embodied ways of being and knowing ourselves as individuals belonging in community. We listened with our hearts, our skin, our bones, and our breath, tuning into our individual senses of wonder within the aliveness of the emerging collective. We celebrated our differences and reached across distances of age, background, language, and geography, resonating in the joyful connections that emerged through artistic exploration and the ripples of self-discovery.

我由衷感謝看嘸舞蹈劇場的藝術領導者蘇品文，與何晏妤Naceku— 他們對性別認同、性別表達、 #女性主義關懷、女性主義意義的持續關注，以及他們的慷慨、領導力與願景，形塑了這個藝術節的每一刻。能與表演者游恩恩 Umaw Lihan 一同呈現《火馬與影子》新版本是我的榮幸，而這個版本能夠以無障礙方式呈現給台灣觀眾，全仰賴品文、Naceku 的細緻翻譯與 #文化支持，還有技術團隊的專業、投入與熱情，使這次首演得以順利完成。
My heartfelt thanks go to KuaBo’s artistic leaders Su PinWen and Naceku, whose unwavering dedication to bringing awareness to gender identity and expression - feminism cares and feminism matters - continues to shape the heart of this festival. It was an honour to share the stage with performing artist Lihan Umaw for a new version of Firehorse and Shadow, made accessible to Taiwanese audiences thanks to the skilled translation, thoughtful cultural support, and generosity of PinWen, Naceku, and the excellent technical team, whose care, enthusiasm, and professionalism made this premiere possible.

We invite you to think about stories, people, places; lost and found.

Is there a memory, taste, or scent that is folded into your heart that you hope will be carried forward for generations?

Is there a wish you have for a relative or friend?

Are there special stories of courage in your family line?

Respond on the slips of paper that we have provided, however feels best – through writing, drawing, gesturing, speaking into the paper, stamping upon or otherwise! Once you have released your wish into the paper, fold then insert your wish into the small slot opening of Fortune Cookie.
