NightShift Street Ministries Our vision is to meet the needs of disadvantaged people in our community.

Reaching out with unconditional love, 365 days a year, to people struggling with homelessness, addiction, mental illness and poverty in the Whalley neighbourhood of Surrey and in the City of Langley, BC. Starting with a hot meal, clothing and care kits, offered in an atmosphere of friendship, we are about building relationships that offer love, hope and purpose. Our Mobile Outreach Unit volunteers

provide basic medical and counselling services; our drop-in programs offer support, friendship, referrals and activities.

Addiction can touch any family. It may be drugs, alcohol, or another dependency that slowly affects the people we love.

And when someone we care about is struggling, we struggle too.

We try to help.
We pray.
We give advice.
We offer support.
And sometimes, we feel like nothing is working.

Over the past 20 years, countless dedicated churches have wholeheartedly embraced our mission, allowing us to share care, dignity and unconditional love with our community.

Today, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to Surrey Alliance Church, one of our longest enduring church partnerships, and their amazing volunteer team for faithfully serving at our Surrey outreach every Monday night.

They come ready to prepare and serve meals, bring live music and create moments of joy and connection for our street friends. You are a beautiful example of what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the neighbourhood.

Sometimes, the timing of kindness feels truly special. 💛

Just one day after discussing with staff how God always provides exactly what we need, every day, we received this generous donation from the Lac Viet Caring Hands Foundation.

At NightShift, holistic care means seeing the whole person, not just one symptom.

It means bringing care through the MOU in a way that helps prevent small health concerns from becoming a crisis.

It means meeting people where they are, listening to what they need and supporting them with compassion.

It means treating wounds, caring for tired feet, offering health education and helping our street friends feel seen, respected and cared for, right where they are.

How many times have you seen a family member, a friend, or someone on the street struggling with addiction and quietly thought, “Is there still hope?”

Many of us have heard — or even believed — the phrase “Once an addict, always an addict.” But that is not the full story.

Yes. Over the past 22 years, NightShift has lost many street friends to addiction. But we have also walked alongside people who fought hard, took one step at a time and found their way into recovery.

Recovery is not a single miracle moment. It is a process made of support, setbacks, brave decisions and many small steps forward.

We know many families are carrying the weight of this reality. That’s why we decided to start this conversation here.

This is where care begins for many of our street friends.

We provide a safe and welcoming space for primary healthcare, where a conversation can reveal that:
- a persistent headache may be related to dehydration
- tiredness may be a sign that the body needs nutritional support or a
- a painful wound needs immediate attention before it becomes worse

This is the heart of NightShift: helping our street friends access the right support at the right time while reducing unnecessary strain on our healthcare system.

Let's talk about the MOU.

The Mobile Outreach Unit (MOU) was launched during the pandemic to bring primary care and compassionate support to our street friends across Surrey and Langley.

What many people do not know is that this mission began long before the MOU.

Since 2010, NightShift has provided mobile counselling and basic nursing services through a program known as the Care Bus. When the Care Bus was retired, the MOU picked up the torch to continue that same commitment.

Over the past 16 years, we have cared for thousands of clients—2,231 in the past three years alone—and this ministry continues every week.
