Tynehead Hatchery

Tynehead Hatchery The Serpentine Enhancement Society (operators of the Tynehead Hatchery) is a 100% volunteer run society.

We are committed to the education of people of all ages about the importance of Salmon to our Watershed, improving the habitat for salmon within our area of the Serpentine River, and raising/releasing three salmon species back into the Serpentine River. The Tynehead Hatchery is located within the Tynehead Park in North Surrey, British Columbia. Coho, Chum and Chinook salmon return to the urban wat

ershed of the Serpentine River. Volunteers gather some of these salmon to raise their young to the stage of release back into the Serpentine River and its tributaries.

The last two days have been fin clipping time for our Coho fry.

Under the direction of our wonderful DFO Community Advisor, Paul, we clipped the adipose fins of 22,549 Coho fry.

This would not have been possible without the fantastic work of the team leaders from the Salmon Habitat Restoration Program (SHaRP), our own volunteers and others!

We remove the adipose fin primarily due to allow fisher people to identify between wild and hatchery - we can only keep hatchery for the table menu🐟

These clipped Coho will be transferred to our rearing pond in a few weeks where they will live until next May before smelting and heading out to the ocean.

I have put explanations under each photo, so please read.

Last day of our Spring Field trips where our local Surrey schools came to release the Coho they had been raising in their classrooms. A big thank you to the teachers and all the children’s family members who made these trips possible. And a big thank you to all of the volunteers who came in weekly for all of April and May to make these trips a great learning experience: Don, Bob, Connie, Harold, Brian, Carol and our trusty classroom teachers Susan and Linda!
