Today is World Humanitarian Day! A day to honour the aid workers, volunteers, and organizations around the world who show up for people in their most vulnerable moments, often at great personal risk. 🌍

At Feels Like Home Newcomers, many of the families we serve have lived through the very crises that humanitarian workers respond to. Today we stand in solidarity with all those affected by conflict and displacement, and with the countless people on the ground working tirelessly to protect and support them.

Kindness costs nothing but means everything, and we are reminded of that truth every single day in the work we do and the communities we are honoured to be a part of. 💛

Every week, FLHN works to make sure families in our community receive more than just groceries, they receive a reminder that they are not alone.

Our Shelter Food Security and Outreach Program exists to make sure newcomer families have access to the essentials they need to settle, grow and thrive. A huge part of making that possible is our incredible partnerships, like with CityReach Care Society whose whole mission is rooted in bringing hope to vulnerable individuals, children and families across Greater Vancouver. Each week they provide us with carefully packed hampers full of fresh produce, dairy, protein and grains with a warm smile to go with it.

We are so proud to do this work alongside partners who care as deeply as we do. 💚

At Feels Like Home Newcomers, we know that settling into a new community comes with real challenges, and access to fresh, culturally appropriate food is one of them.

Through our Shelter Food Security and Outreach Program, we are proud to partner with incredible local organizations to make sure our families have what they need. In today’s post we are highlighting two of those amazing partners. A Rocha BC Environmental Centre provides fresh organic vegetables straight from their farm to our newcomer families as part of their Farm to Families program, rooted in a deep belief that people and nature thrive together. And through the Cloverdale Community Kitchen (Storehouse Community Hub Society), rescued food that would otherwise go to waste is sorted, packed, and shared weekly with families across our community.

None of this happens without the people who show up and make it real every single week. A huge shoutout to Sara, Karina and Pat, three of the incredible people at FLHN who help facilitate this work with so much care and dedication. 💛⭐️

The Foundations Language and Life Skills Program has wrapped up for this school year! 🎉 What an incredible group of people to celebrate and we could not be more proud of everyone who completed the 2025/26 session.

Foundations is a free language and life skills program for newcomer adults running from September through to June at Recreation Surrey Guildford. This year Foundations program welcomed those from 10 countries speaking Pashto, Dari, Tigrinya, French, Spanish, and so many more languages, all together to build their English skills, develop practical life skills, and find connection and belonging along the way.

We are so grateful to all our wonderful partners such as City of Surrey and SurreyCares Community Foundation for making the Foundations program possible. Here’s to everyone who walked through the Feels Like Home Newcomer doors this school year!

Our Passport to Fun Summer Camp team has been spending this week in training and orientation, getting ready to welcome campers starting next Monday! 🎉

A big part of our prep has been talking through how we show up for kids this summer. As a team we are committed to facilitating Calm, Curiosity, Compassion, Confidence, Clarity, Courage, Creativity, and Connectedness for every single camper, in everything from circle time to field trips to the small moments in between.

At the end of the day what we really want every camper to walk away with is meaningful friendships, a love of learning, and the feeling that they truly belong. Through hands-on activities, cultural celebration, outdoor adventures, and community connection, we are so excited to welcome families this summer.

Passport to Fun is a free summer camp for newcomer kids ages 6-12, proudly sponsored by United Way BC We still have a few spaces open for sessions 2 and 3 — see the link in comments! 🌟

Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦🍁

Canada is forever made richer by the diverse stories, cultures, and journeys that newcomers bring with them. At the heart of it all is connection, the relationships we build across difference, the hands we extend, and the communities we grow together.

Today we celebrate a country that we are proud to call home and the countless people that help make our country a safe, welcoming and enriching land to live, laugh, love and grow!

When a fire forced the closure of the school where our Feels Like Home School’s Out program runs, everything changed overnight for the newcomer children and families we serve.

Thanks to the generosity of United Way BC and the Surrey School District, we were able to pivot quickly — offering online programming and organizing home visits so kids and families could stay connected to a community that cares. Those visits also included food boxes, made possible by the incredible team at Cloverdale Community Kitchen.

Over Spring Break, we’re looking forward to keeping that connection going with a field trip, games in the park, and time for our Schools Out kids to simply be together and have fun.

In a difficult moment, this kind of partnership made all the difference. We’re deeply grateful for the responsive support from the unitedway_bc team and the Community Schools Partnership team at SSD36.

This is the kind of community we’re working to build together. 💛
