When a fire forced the closure of the school where our Feels Like Home School’s Out program runs, everything changed overnight for the newcomer children and families we serve.

Thanks to the generosity of United Way BC and the Surrey School District, we were able to pivot quickly — offering online programming and organizing home visits so kids and families could stay connected to a community that cares. Those visits also included food boxes, made possible by the incredible team at Cloverdale Community Kitchen.

Over Spring Break, we’re looking forward to keeping that connection going with a field trip, games in the park, and time for our Schools Out kids to simply be together and have fun.

In a difficult moment, this kind of partnership made all the difference. We’re deeply grateful for the responsive support from the unitedway_bc team and the Community Schools Partnership team at SSD36.

This is the kind of community we’re working to build together. 💛

For many families, celebrations mean gathering around one table — grandparents, cousins, siblings, energy filling the room. But for many of the refugee families in our community, celebrations such as Family Day look different.

They carry love across borders. They light candles and share meals while parts of their hearts live in other countries. Sometimes in places they cannot return to. Families are spread across continents, time zones, and oceans. Phone calls replace hugs and photos stand in for presence.

We celebrate their resilience and th courage it took to start over. We hope they have a sense of safety and new beginnings. We see both the joy and the ache that come hand in hand. We hold space for the missing seats at the table, and we honour the strength it takes to build community far from home.

If you are celebrating far from loved ones on this Family Day, please know you are not alone and that you belong here. 🤍

We’re still smiling from Ride for Refuge last weekend - and we’re so thankful it was a week ago in the sunshine!

Our hearts are full thinking of everyone who came out to ride, walk, volunteer, and cheer. You showed what community is all about - people showing up for each other!

A huge shout-out to our amazing sponsors Vancity, DIVERSEcity Community Resources, Save-On-Foods, and Starbucks, for standing with us in support of newcomers.

Thank you, everyone! You remind us what hope and welcome look like!

We are deeply moved by the courage and perseverance of our families and individuals who have been forced to leave their homelands behind and find themselves in our community. For many, the idea of home remains uncertain - a reality that calls for more than short-term gestures. As writer and cultural critic Bell Hooks reminds us, solidarity is not about stepping in temporarily, but about showing up consistently with shared purpose and care. When we accompany newcomers with openness, humility, and sustained support, we all grow. Our communities become stronger, more connected, and more just when everyone - no matter where their story begins, is welcomed, valued, and empowered to thrive with dignity and belonging.
