General information
At the Surrey Urban Mission we are a community! The Mission is located in the Whalley area of Surrey. This is a place for people of all ages and needs to come together, from babies to seniors, singles, families, and children, to access resources and services, to enjoy community, to participate and to volunteer. It is a warm place to spend a few hours, enjoy companionship, share healthy community meals and receive practical assistance. It is also a weather shelter where people can come to eat and sleep during inclement weather. Participants in our programs and services include neighbourhood kids, single moms, elderly and disabled residents, people who are currently homeless and those who are vulnerably housed (recently homeless, living in poverty, having difficulty accessing services) as well as those with challenges related to addiction and people battling mental illness. The Mission is a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, B.C. Synod. Christ the King Lutheran Ministry and Emmanuel Lutheran Church share the building with the Mission. Three other faith communities worship here each week. Dedicated volunteers keep the Mission running. Individuals, families, and volunteers from many faith communities, businesses, union members, emergency services personnel and people living in our neighbourhood share their time and get involved in many ways that allow the Mission to keep its doors open. Our wonderful volunteers put the “community” into the Mission! Over the years we have introduced many programs and services and people with a wide variety of needs have experienced care, compassion and practical support amongst us. ‘Ask and you will receive’ and ‘yes we can!’ are attitudes embodied at the Mission. Residents of Surrey and neighbouring communities donate food, goods and services, as well as their time and skills as volunteers. The Mission Volunteer Corps includes a variety of people, some who have been homeless, some who are currently homeless and others who participate in our programs, as well as community volunteers and mentors. The Volunteer Corps assisted with recycling efforts during Olympics 2010 at the City of Surrey’s Celebration Site at Holland Park and regularly participates in the Adopt-a-Street program. We also partner with schools, churches, government and other organizations in many innovative ways. Together we tackle problems and find solutions. Donations of clothing, food, gifts and household and children’s items are welcome. We also accept cash donations that help us buy food, socks, shoes, blankets, hygiene supplies and other essentials. It is our pleasure to serve anyone who comes through our doors, whatever their reason or need.
