Happy fall y’all! 🍃 🍁 🍂
With the falling leaves and cooler weather, we know that means back to school time for kids and parents. Being about 3 weeks into the school year, we wanted to put out some friendly reminders about what this time of year can mean for our community’s kiddos & teens. And some tips on how to help families make a smooth transition back into the school year rhythm. We hope you enjoy and take care out there! Well wishes from all of us at Soul Matters 💚
1. Normalize the adjustment period. A difficult first few weeks doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Children are adapting to multiple changes at once.
2. Re-establish predictable routines. Consistent wake-up, bedtime, meals, homework, and preparation for the next day can create a sense of stability.
3. Protect sleep and downtime. After concentrating and managing social expectations all day, some children genuinely need decompression when they get home.
4. Avoid overscheduling initially. It may help to leave some breathing room while children regain their school-year rhythm.
5. Connect before correcting. If a child comes home irritable or overwhelmed, curiosity can be more helpful than immediately focusing on behaviour: “It seems like today took a lot out of you. What was the hardest part?”
6. Support rather than take over. Parents can help children break homework, organization, or morning routines into manageable steps while gradually encouraging independence.
7. Notice effort, not only outcomes. Recognize things such as getting up on time, trying something difficult, attending school despite nervousness, or beginning homework.
8. Make room for mixed feelings. A child can be excited to see friends and still feel anxious about schoolwork, teachers, social situations, or expectations.
9. Watch for persistent changes. If distress is significant, worsening, or continuing to interfere with sleep, school attendance, relationships, or everyday functioning, parents can consider speaking with the child’s school or an appropriate healthcare professional.
