Trust, Betrayal, and Child Exploitation, A True Story Of A Hidden Predator Within the Family Circle

Most parents worry about the stranger online. Yet research shows that children are far more likely to be sexually exploited by someone they know, love, and trust. When Susan discovered a hidden phone containing covert recordings of her daughters, her family’s world was shattered. This powerful true story highlights an uncomfortable reality, sometimes the greatest threat to a child is not outside the home, but someone already welcomed inside it.

🚨🚨🚨New B.C. Conservative leader voted down an answer to TRC6 🚨🚨🚨
Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action 6 calls for repealing Section 43 of the Criminal Code, the legal defence that allows physical punishment of children. Kerry-Lynne Findlay, voted against Bill C-273, introduced by Peter Julian (New Westminster), which sought to repeal it. The bill later died when Parliament was prorogued.

It’s time to break up with punishment-based discipline.

Spanking, yelling, threats, the “naughty chair” - sure, they might stop behavior in the moment, but only because they trigger *fear*. And fear flips kids into fight, flight, or freeze… not learning.

Punishment asks: “How do I make this stop?”
Discipline asks: “What skill is missing?”

Research shows punishment-based approaches actually lead to MORE unwanted behavior over time (🚨), which is why so many parents feel stuck in the yell → calm down → repeat cycle (it’s not you, and it’s not your kid).

So we’re ditching the old-school approach and following the science.

When discipline protects a child’s self-esteem, builds connection, and teaches skills… that’s where the real change happens.

✨ Short-term: behaviors start to shift without shame or fear.
✨ Long-term: your child comes to you for life, because they trust you.

🚨For decades, the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and teacher unions have used member resources, advocacy efforts, and legal opposition to challenge bills aimed at repealing Section 43, the legal defence that still permits physical punishment of children in Canada. This opposition has also stood in tension with Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action 6, which calls for repealing Section 43.

Rights are not trickle-down. Protecting adults in institutions does not automatically mean children’s rights are protected.

If we are serious about reducing violence, we should ask, what forms of violence do we normalize? Whose safety gets prioritized? And why are children still expected to wait for full protection from violence while institutions fight to maintain exemptions?

Violence in schools is rising, and educators are feeling the impact every day.

Classrooms are changing. Teachers are seeing more complex needs—and fewer supports to meet them.

This is what educators across Manitoba are telling us.

Canada talks a lot about coercive control, victim protection, and keeping kids safe online while children still lack full legal protection from physical punishment. What does safety mean at home?
