To all our friends and community supporters. It's been brought to our attention that one of our founders, Sebastian Sajda has passed.

This news is shocking and comes with a collective loss. We imagine many of you have questions, but unfortunately we do not have further information. We ask for your patience while his friends and family grieve.

When the City of Surrey's previous leadership began revisiting a decades old idea of bulldozing a road (the 84th Ave Connector) through Bear Creek Park, Sebastian was first on the scene - providing a fury of relentless, yet very tactful opposition! It's with his leadership that our group was founded.

From its inception, the 84th Ave Connector was full of flaws and faced tremendous opposition. In fact, it'd been X'd by City's previous councils in 2007 and 2013 due to its social and environmental impacts.

But.. in 2021, the City Council voted 5 to 4 along party lines to connect 84 Avenue through the south end of Bear Creek Park. The vote came despite a consultation report that found two-thirds of respondents opposed the road expansion.

Over a 4+ year span, Sebastian and our team protested City Hall, presented at numerous City Council meetings, hosted many community forums, garnered over 6800 petitioned signatures and took the City of Surrey to the B.C. Supreme Court (2021) to halt the 84th Avenue Connector project. We argued that the road, designed to connect Newton and Fleetwood, would destroy parkland, damage salmon-bearing streams, and proceeded without proper consultation.. Although the judge saw the legitimacy of our cause, the court unfortunately ruled that the City of Surrey was within its rights to proceed with the construction.

The 84th Ave Connector was completed in 2023, but Sebastian (and the Friends of Bear Creek Park) have continue to monitor environmental impacts and provide safety solutions for our rare / beautiful park.

Sebastian was unselfishly dedicated to the protection of our natural environments. He campaigned countless hours and lead with a calm, strategic presence.

If you have any thoughts or memories, please feel free to share them in the comments below.

Continued 84th Avenue road expansion wildlife killings and destruction
- Photos taken March 19 2024 by member of FOBCP - accidents continue with one on Wednesday at 84th and King George Blvd - 10:30 - 11:00 pm - March 27 2024. Adding that fires are now being set under the bridge that the Fire Department had to put out (so many bonuses for this road)
We must really thank those folks who wanted this 84th road expansion for the continued destruction of wildlife, nature and car vehicle collisions, and garbage to be thrown along the new road and in the creek and green space so the wildlife and nearby residents can leave a clean and healthy life.

84th and King George Boulevard collision affecting traffic in all directions. Fence down towards 140th same as last time. 3 different areas up there affected many times with this rushed road creation in Bear Creek Park. Power outage has affected other areas. Smell of gas at 6:20 am via BC Hydro. Road should never have been allowed to finish, and should be closed off to vehicles. Leave the park wildlife and greenery alone.

Bear Creek Park - This is YOUR park - Video 3

Presentation by Friends of Bear Creek Park Annie Kaps and Jaeger Mah - Saturday, November 25 2023 at 10:00 am at Surrey's Historic Society, Surrey Archives, Cloverdale, Surrey BC

Annie & Jaeger presented the importance of maintaining and keeping intact our Surrey Parks, especially Bear Creek Park which has been Surrey's CENTRAL greenspace which creates a sanctuary away from people's busy everyday lives, and is the habitat for such a diverse number of species which is needed to be protected for everyone's survival. The needed achievement is to get protection for the Southlands so this devastation doesn't occur again.

Several videos we will post for your listening. Thank you to the Historic Society members and to all of you for the continued support during these many years. There was also present during the meeting, a very educated young 13 year old, who was very well in tune with the history of Surrey and it was lovely to listen to him and see the youth of today take an interest in issues such as these.

CHEMICAL FOUND IN TIRES SUSPECTED IN WEST VANCOUVER DEATH OF SALMON

A B.C. conservation group believes a common chemical found in car tires is responsible for the death of dozens of salmon in a North Shore creek.

The West Vancouver Streamkeepers says student volunteers monitoring Brothers Creek recently discovered at least 30 dead coho salmon, shortly after heavy rainfalls.

Streamkeepers former president John Barker said the group contacted Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), and believes the chemical 6PDD quinone, used to prevent tires from cracking, is likely responsible for the deaths.

“The indicators are that that’s where it’s come from,” he said.

Automobile tires that break down, it sits up on the roadways in the summer, and then with the influence of sunshine the toxicity is really elevated, and then believe it or not it can run off into the stream and just annihilate coho.”

Other salmon species in the stream appeared to be unaffected, he said, which is also consistent with the chemical being much less toxic to other salmonids.

Within a short period of time, other coho returning to the stream appeared to be unaffected, he added, suggesting the chemical was washed into the waterway by recent rains.

“It was like a plume or a flush came through and took these fish out,” he said. “The following week, absolutely amazing … the last team to survey on week three had 27 fish, and 15 were coho, all alive and all healthy.”

DFO research scientist Tanya Brown said Brothers Creek is one of several waterways the agency is monitoring in Metro Vancouver for 6PDD quinone.

Researchers have been taking water samples before, during and after rain events in order to test for surges of the chemical, she said.

While the results aren’t back yet, Brown said research elsewhere in the region suggests it could “very well have led to die offs.”

“From the work we have been doing over the last two and a half years for all of our Metro Vancouver sites … our average levels at all of our Metro Vancouver sites at various creeks exceed levels that where we would expect lethality in coho salmon,” she said.

“From the time we go out before to during a rain event we are seeing up to a 90-fold increase in 6PPD quinone concentrations, and those levels are at levels where we are expecting to see lethality.

Brown described the consistently high levels of the chemical in local waterways during rain events as “very concerning,” adding that DFO had scheduled a meeting with the West Vancouver Streamkeepers next week to discuss the issue.

Barker said he believes the chemical is present in all major tire manufacturers’ product, leaving consumers with little they can do.

But he said he’d like to see municipalities building more bioswales — landscape features that soak up polluted runoff and use earth and vegetation to filter it out — ear sensitive waterways.

“It’s sitting on the roadways, it’s had its effects from the oxygen, it’s terribly toxic,” he said of 6PPD quinone.

“As soon as you get a rainfall that’s either going to find a catch basin or come over the hillside and enter the streams.”

The presentation was well received by the committee and the final point was to get permanent protection of the park land that was devastatingly affected by the 84th avenue road expansion work.

Thank you to Annie and Jaeger!
