Sundre Search And Rescue

Some members of Sundre Search and Rescue recently attended a Bear & Cougar Safety and Awareness course to practice and refresh their bear and cougar awareness and safety skills.
It was a great course—highly informative, practical, and led by excellent instructors. The presentation and outdoor bear spray training provided valuable knowledge and hands-on practice to help ensure participants are prepared if the time comes.
A big thank you to Mountain View BearSmart for offering this valuable training, and to Direct Outdoor Gear for hosting the course at their store. We are fortunate to have such a great local Sundre business supporting opportunities like this!
If you see a course being offered by Mountain View BearSmart, we highly recommend taking the time to attend. Their short courses are a great way to build your knowledge and confidence and help ensure you are ready when spending time in bear and cougar country.
Thank you again to the instructors and organizers for a fantastic evening!

Sundre SAR volunteers took part in a tracking training session hosted by our own Ken Taylor and Andy Jackson, alongside members of Mountain View SAR.

It was a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills, put those skills into practice, and build confidence as a team. We’re always working to strengthen our skills so we can better serve our communities when called upon.

A big thank you to Ken, Andy, and everyone who took part. Great training, great teamwork, and a great day in the sunshine!

Members of Sundre Search and Rescue were honoured to assist alongside many other agencies, volunteers, and community members in the search for Parker.

Today, we join that community in mourning his loss.

Sundre Search and Rescue is proud to recognize team members Noah Bradley and Patty McCallum for receiving the 2025 Disaster Response Coin from Search and Rescue Alberta.

These coins were presented by Sundre SAR President Paul Smith in recognition of their dedication and volunteer service supporting wildfire disaster response efforts across Alberta throughout 2025.

Over the past year, SAR volunteers across the province stepped beyond traditional SAR roles to support communities impacted by wildfire emergencies, contributing thousands of volunteer hours in disaster response operations.

Thank you Noah and Patty for your commitment, professionalism, and willingness to serve wherever needed. Your efforts continue to make a meaningful difference for Albertans and the communities we support.

Congratulations and thank you for representing Sundre SAR.

First Post of 2026!

We’re kicking off 2026 busy and prepared! The past month has been packed with training, exercises, and projects.

Our team continues ongoing rope rescue training with Sundre SAR’s very own member, Ihor Holowczynsky, a highly experienced technical rescue instructor and NFPA contributor whose expertise is a huge asset to our members.

We also joined Mountain View SAR in January for snowshoeing and skiing as part of the prerequisites for an upcoming overnight exercise. A second training session planned for February has been postponed due to unprecedented warm weather and will resume once colder, snowier conditions allow us to complete signal fires, shelter building, and first aid scenarios. All leading to a final weekend where members put their knowledge to use in an overnight session.

Meanwhile, construction continues on the new meeting room at the Sundre SAR base. A huge thank you to our dedicated team members who are making this updated space possible for meetings, training, and team activities.

We’re starting the year strong! Follow along as we continue training and preparing to serve our community!
