FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Summerside Port Corporation Inc Announces New Cold Storage Facility at the Marine Terminal in Summerside

SUMMERSIDE, PE - A major investment in Prince Edward Island's food supply chain is moving forward with the announcement of Seaside Cold Storage, a new 25,000-square-foot cold storage facility that will strengthen storage capacity and support continued growth across the Island's food processing, agriculture, and seafood sectors.

Currently under development at Port of Summerside’s Marine Terminal, Seaside Cold Storage will provide approximately 3,000 pallet positions dedicated to the storage of frozen finished foods, food ingredients, and seafood products. The facility has been designed to meet the growing demand for modern, reliable cold storage while improving supply chain efficiency for Prince Edward Island businesses.

The facility will feature three separate temperature-controlled storage rooms, allowing customers to safely store a variety of products while meeting diverse operational requirements. Seaside Cold Storage will offer flexible storage solutions for Island companies and service providers, helping businesses expand their capacity, improve logistics, and better serve domestic and export markets.

The project is supported through a collaborative investment by federal and provincial partners. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is contributing $1 million in non-repayable funding and $500,000 in repayable funding toward the project. The Prince Edward Island Government is also providing $200,000 to support the development of this important piece of food infrastructure.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support the Summerside Port Corporation's strategic plan to revitalize and repurpose existing, underutilized infrastructure, and create Seaside Cold Storage to respond to growing industry demand,” said Bobby Morrissey, Member of Parliament for Egmont. “Investments like these help develop modern, adaptable infrastructure which in turn, supports innovation, business growth and a more competitive economy."

“As an export-driven province, Prince Edward Island’s agriculture, seafood, and food processing industries need local, modern infrastructure to help meet today and tomorrow’s demand for our world-class food products,” said Premier Rob Lantz. “Seaside Cold Storage and the Port of Summerside are seizing an important opportunity to positively impact our Island economy with their ambition. The province is proud to be a partner in these efforts to strengthen our local economy while supporting Island business reach global markets.”

"Seaside Cold Storage represents an important investment in the future of Prince Edward Island's food economy," said Thane Smallwood, President and Chair of Summerside Port Corporation Inc. "By increasing the availability of modern frozen storage capacity, we are helping Island businesses strengthen their supply chains, improve operational flexibility, and create new opportunities for growth across the agriculture, seafood, and food processing industries."

The new facility is expected to be commissioned in Fall 2026 and will provide critical infrastructure that supports the long-term competitiveness of Prince Edward Island's food sector.
As demand for high-quality cold storage continues to grow, Seaside Cold Storage is positioned to become a key logistics partner for producers, processors, distributors, and exporters across Prince Edward Island.
