Last weekend we wrapped up our final race day of our first summer series. The kayakers went out in the morning on a glassy lake to summon the wind. After lunch and the race briefing, the wind came in right on schedule with a fairly decent breeze from the north.

The competition was tight and the spirits were high. We would like to thank all of the competitors in addition to all of the volunteers on shore and on the lake.

We will be starting our second race series next Saturday (August 16th) with lunch at noon every Saturday and the races starting at 1pm. Our second series race days will be running up to and including Sept 13th.

Our weekly Saturday race series last weekend was the best we've had so far this year. It started off with a great lunch at noon before 3 monohulls and 5 catamarans headed out for some friendly and competitive racing. The wind was steady from the north which really allowed the racers to find their groove and practice their tactics and seamanship around the race course.

After the races were over, our wonderful members got together for a potluck dinner (with desserts!). Near the shore, there was also an osprey that made a successful dive into the lake for their own dinner.

All together, a great time was had by everyone and I just want to send a big thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers in the kitchen and on the committee boat who make this event happen each and every weekend throughout the summer.

We are excited to announce we are restarting our Boat Share program for this season! This is geared towards experienced sailors who are wanting to get back out on the water but may not have a boat available.

It is also a great option for those that have taken our sailing classes and are looking to take the next step in their sailing journey and gain more time on the water.

Please see https://sosailing.ca/boat-share/ for more details on the program and how to join.

Who is this for? The SOSA Boat Share program is for experienced sailors who are keen to go sailing but may not have their own boat. It could also be for you if you are looking to become more well rounded on a variety of different boats. This program is not intended to replace our sailing courses. Yo...

Wayfarer Weekend started out with a blustery southerly. Races were cancelled due to the lake conditions, cold, rain, and variable gusting winds.

That didn't prevent a yummy lunch from being served and enjoyed!

Sunday brought fair weather and the sail to Naramata for some ice cream! The winds started out light from the south, then faded to nothing mid-lake, forcing some to return and others to paddle. Nothing was stopping us from some good and well deserved ice cream!

The wind filled from the south and rotated to the north on the return journey. Thankfully most boats did not require paddles to be deployed on the way home.

Waiting for us back onshore, a feast! Thanks to all the volunteers and chefs! The potluck was very yummy and filling after a hard day sailing... uhm... paddling!

The Naramata Mug 2024 was a huge success with sailors attending from up and down the Okanagan Valley, the coast, and abroad.

The wind was favorable with generally light conditions and a steady breeze on day one, with building, albeit shifty wind on day two. All five race were completed, with some shortened due to the lighter winds. The SOSA beach was filled with over 30 boats competing in three classes: Monohull, Laser, and Multihull.

Many sailors camped on on the SOSA grounds, enjoying the beautiful views and refreshing Okanagan lake.

MLA Dan Ashton in attendance for the awards. Mr. Ashton played a key role in helping to secure a long term lease for SOSA.

Results are posted to our official website: https://sosailing.ca/

Monohull Fleet – Paul Killeen (KYC), Logan Wright (COSA), Geral vanwoerkom (SOSA)
Laser Fleet – Austin Stewart (Hollyburn), Trevor Owen (NOSA), Alan Wright (COSA)
Multihull Fleet – Rupert Holmes-Smith (SOSA), Derek Carnell (SOSA), Marc Reinarz (NOSA)

A big thanks to all our volunteers and leadership for putting on an amazing event. See you in 2025!

Naramata Mug and Bruno Lieppe Cup Regatta a great success

The Naramata Mug and Bruno Lieppe Cup Regatta held at SOSA this past weekend was a great success. Many thanks to the competitors and the many volunteers who all put in such a tremendous effort! Sailors from NOSA and COSA, our sister clubs on Okanagan Lake, as well as from Surrey SC and a major contingent from Hollyburn SC (11 Lasers) all joined the sailors from SOSA to compete for the oldest dinghy race competition on Okanagan Lake – The Naramata Mug. This year 29 boats competed in three different fleets: General Handicap, Laser and Multihull. At least one boat from each participating club placed in the top three positions of one or more fleets.

The Naramata Mug is awarded to the overall winner of the combined fleets. This year’s winner was Austin Stewart from Hollyburn SC in a Laser.

First place in each fleet was won by:

• General Handicap Fleet – John van Woerkom from Surrey SC in an Albacore
• Laser Fleet – Austin Stewart from Hollyburn SC
• Multihull Fleet – Michael Leies from SOSA in an F18

The Bruno Lieppe Cup keelboat race which is hosted annually by SOSA had six boats competing from Penticton YC and Summerland YC. The top three places in order were:
Brad Terpstra in Bad Dog, Deedee Asmundson in Wild Goats and Mark Saar in Whiskeyjack.

SOSA is grateful for the generous support from its many prize sponsors for a wide range of gifts which were greatly appreciated. Many thanks to: Eskala Mountain Sports Penticton, Maple Roch, Nautical Sailing Services, Poplar Grove Winery, Replenish Summerland, Summerland Waterfront Resort.

The Saturday evening Dinner and Music Party was very popular, being attended by more over 60 people. SOSA greatly appreciates the generous support of its food sponsors for both the Regatta Saturday dinner and the Sunday breakfast. Many thanks for these delicious donations from: Blossoms Fruits and Vegetables, Cobs Bread Bakery Penticton, Granny’s Fruit Stand, Nesters Market Summerland, Safeway Penticton, Summerland IGA, South Main Market, T-Bones Fresh Meal Markets Penticton.
