On this day, 45 years ago, Terry was forced to end his Marathon of Hope, near Thunder Bay, Ontario.

"As Terry ran through intense pain, hundreds of supporters gathered along the highway cheering him on, saying, "Keep going, you can do it!" and "We're all behind you." Refusing to let anyone down, he took a break hoping the pain might subside. Terry ran another mile until he couldn't see any more people, returned to the van, and asked Doug to take him to a hospital. Terry called his parents in Port Coquitlam and told them the cancer had returned. The following day he flew home to begin further treatments. Terry had run his last mile of the Marathon of Hope."

Terry’s goal of raising $1 for every Canadian is realized. The national population reaches 24.1M and the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope totals $24.18M raised.

Today, your continued support of Terry's legacy brings innovative cancer research to life and gives Canadians facing cancer more hope.

Terry sent a letter to the Canadian Cancer Society, asking them to support his run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

“I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying that this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to.”
