We at Stratford Perth Pride are saddened by the events that took place over the weekend. Flag poles from Central Perth, Elma township, North Easthope, and Mornington Central Public School, which had all been targeted and vandalized, their poles and pride flags had been cut down.

Currently, the OPP is investigating these incidents, and why these hate-driven crimes occurred specifically during Pride Month. These incidents follow several similar hateful acts throughout southwester Ontario.

The Pride Flag stands as a symbol of unity for those in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and towns or cities that fly them let us all know that they see those in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and want them to know that they are welcomed. Though taking down the flag doesn't make our community go away, trying to scare us doesn't make us silent, it adds fuel to our fire and makes it just that more important for us to be seen.

Pride began as a protest, and sometimes we need to remember that fact, and no matter how many people try to push us down, we need to rise above. We need our allies and those dedicated to the community to help push our voices, make us louder than ever before.

Being supportive means more than it may seem. The Canadian Mental Health Association states on their website several statistics involving affirmation and inclusivity in correlation to the increase in q***r youth.

Affirming environments matter. According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ youth who have at least one accepting adult in their life are 40% less likely to attempt su***de.

Community saves lives. Youth who participate in 2SLGBTQIA+ programs and peer-led groups report higher self-esteem, greater resilience, and a stronger sense of belonging (Egale Canada, 2021).

Visibility brings change. In recent years, more than half of Canadians report increased support for gender and sexual diversity, and many workplaces, schools, and community organizations are embracing inclusive practices and policies.

Allyship works. A 2023 survey by Mental Health Research Canada found that mental health outcomes improved for LGBTQ2+ people when they had access to culturally responsive care and community-based supports

In the late hours of June 1, 2026, individuals attended Emily Stowe Public School in Norwich, ON and deliberately burned the Pride flag displayed at the school.

Hate has no home here in Norwich Township or anywhere in Oxford County.

This act is not just vandalism. It is an attempt to send a message of fear and exclusion to 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff, families, and community members.

The Pride flag represents dignity, respect, and belonging. For many, especially 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, it is a visible reminder that they are seen and not alone.

We will continue to raise the flag. We will continue to stand for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. We will continue to show up for each other.

What happened does not define Norwich Township or Oxford County. Our response to each other does.

We are here, and we are standing together.

Happy Pride from Perth South Township! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Mayor Orr and Councillor Jeff Bell were joined today by MP John Nater, MPP Matthew Rae, representatives from the Health Unit, and members of our community for the raising of the Pride flag.

Mayor Orr noted that "In a small municipality like ours, with one flagpole in the centre of our community, raising the Pride flag is an opportunity to recognize the importance of inclusion, respect, and belonging for all people. For many, this flag serves as a symbol of hope, support, and acceptance."
