President's Report
June 1, 2026
Hello everyone.
I wanted to take a few moments to provide an update on some of the significant
accomplishments and challenges we have experienced over the past six months.
As we head into the summer months, I believe it is important to recognize the progress
being made as we continue working toward building a stronger, more sustainable
Branch for the future.

Events, Activities and Raffles
Over the past several months, we have made a conscious effort to try new things and
offer a greater variety of activities for our members and guests. Initiatives such as pull-
ticket raffles, karaoke, dances, comedy nights, Rafflebox, and other special events have
been introduced in an effort to provide affordable entertainment and create more
opportunities for members to gather and enjoy the Branch.
We know that people want activities and opportunities to connect, and we also
recognize that finances can be tight for many. Our goal is to provide options that are
enjoyable without breaking the bank.
If you have ideas or suggestions for future activities, we want to hear them.

Documentation and Planning
One of the less visible but most important projects has been improving documentation
throughout the Branch.
We have worked to strengthen relationships with our business partners and community
stakeholders while creating clear Memorandums of Understanding and written
agreements wherever possible. This ensures that future Executive Committees will
understand existing arrangements and will not have to start from scratch every time
leadership changes.
We have also been encouraging more members to become involved in chairing
committees and sharing responsibilities. Rather than having a small number of people
carrying the entire workload, we are working to spread knowledge, develop new
leaders, and create opportunities for members to grow into these roles.
While there may be some growing pains along the way, the Branch will be stronger
because of it. Better documentation and greater participation make it easier and less
intimidating for future members to step forward and serve.

TELUS Fibre Upgrade
The Branch has transitioned from aging copper infrastructure and limited internet
capability to high-speed fibre service.
While the installation process has not always gone as smoothly as we would have liked,
the improvements have already made a noticeable difference in our day-to-day
operations.
We now have separate networks for members and guests, as well as for Branch
operations, including our computers, televisions, security systems, point-of-sale
equipment, and other business functions. This provides improved reliability, security,
and flexibility moving forward.

Insurance Review
As part of our review of Branch documentation and operations, it was discovered that
an important aspect of our insurance coverage was missing.
We are not certain how long this gap existed, but it highlighted the importance of
regularly reviewing our policies and documentation. The matter has now been
corrected, and the Branch is properly protected moving forward.

Improved Communication
Improving communication has been a priority for the Executive.
Within the Executive Committee, correspondence affecting the Branch is shared,
consultation is encouraged, and decisions are made collaboratively.
Communication with the membership has also improved through the regular email
distribution of meeting minutes and updates. If you are not receiving Branch
communications, please ensure your email address is up to date in the Legion Portal at
portal.legion.ca.
We continue to maintain our website as a source of important Branch information while
using social media to keep members and the community informed about upcoming
events and activities.

Transparency
The Executive remains committed to conducting Branch business openly and
transparently.
We have seen several examples where concerns have been brought forward by
members, discussed openly, and addressed appropriately. Decisions are discussed,
debated, and made collectively, and members have every right to ask questions and
seek clarification when needed.
Our goal is to ensure that members remain informed and confident in how Branch
business is conducted.

Thank You
There have been many things happening at the Branch that are not always visible to the
membership, but they are essential to keeping the organization operating smoothly.
For that reason, I want to sincerely thank all of our Executive members and volunteers
who continue to step forward and contribute their time, energy, and expertise. The
Branch succeeds because people are willing to show up, get involved, and do the work
that needs to be done.
Your efforts are appreciated more than you know.

A Few Challenges
While we have experienced many successes, there have also been some
disappointments.
Unfortunately, we had to withdraw from some activities, such as Farmer& #39;s Days, simply
because there were not enough people willing to take on the responsibility of organizing
and leading those efforts.
The Executive cannot do everything, nor should they be expected to. The long-term
success of the Branch depends on members being willing to step forward when help is
needed.
We also need to be mindful that we cannot continue relying on the same volunteers for
every event and activity. Many of our volunteers would occasionally like to attend an
event simply as guests, and they deserve that opportunity.
Many hands truly do make light work. Even volunteering occasionally can make a
significant difference and help ensure the workload is shared fairly among many people
rather than a few.

Supporting Branch Activities
Another challenge has been participation in some Branch events.
We have dedicated volunteers who work hard to create activities they hope members
will enjoy. While we understand that every event may not appeal to everyone,
participation and support are important if we want these events to continue.
It can be discouraging for volunteers to invest their time and effort into organizing an
activity only to see limited attendance.
If you have suggestions for improving events or ideas for future activities, please share
them. We welcome constructive feedback and fresh ideas.

Constructive Involvement
One concern that continues to surface is the spread of rumours, misinformation, and
negative commentary regarding the Branch and its leadership.
Healthy debate and differing opinions are welcome and are an important part of any
organization. Members should never feel discouraged from asking questions or
expressing concerns.
However, criticism is most productive when it is brought forward through the proper
channels, where facts can be discussed and concerns can be addressed.
If you have concerns about decisions being made by the Executive, bring them forward.
Ask questions. Attend meetings. Present motions. Participate in the process.
Constructive involvement strengthens the Branch. Rumours and division do not.

What Kind of Member Are You?
Each of us should take a moment to think about the kind of Legion member we want to
be.
Do you want to be the kind of member who helps make things happen, or the kind who
waits for others to do the work?
Do you want to be the kind of member who asks questions, seeks facts, and brings
concerns forward through the proper channels? Or do you want to be the kind of
member who quietly complains while undermining the efforts of those trying to move the Branch forward?
Every member contributes to the culture and success of this Branch, whether through
their actions, their attitude, or their willingness to get involved.
I know what kind of member I want to be.
How about you?

Closing
As summer approaches, I hope everyone has an opportunity to relax, spend time with
family and friends, and enjoy the season.
Thank you for your continued support of Branch 256.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and I look forward to seeing everyone again at our next General
Meeting in September.

In Comradeship,
Robert Stumbur
