Today, June 16, is the Day of the African Child.
Growing up, this was a day many of us celebrated with so much excitement. We wore our African clothes to school, shared cultural food, performed plays, danced, sang, and showed pride in who we were.
But this day also carries a deeper story.
The Day of the African Child began in honour of the brave young people of Soweto, South Africa, who stood up on June 16, 1976, against apartheid and an unjust education system. Many of those children were met with violence, and some lost their lives. If you have watched Sarafina!, then you understand the weight of that history.
This year’s theme is “Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation, and hygiene for every child in Africa.”
And unless you have lived or worked in places where access to clean water, safe toilets, and basic hygiene is not guaranteed, it can be hard to understand how urgent this really is. These are not luxuries. They are basic rights every child deserves.
To the African child celebrating today in schools, community spaces, cultural organizations, and homes, and to the African child across the globe, we honour you.
May you grow with pride, safety, dignity, and access to the basic things every child needs to live, learn, and thrive.
Happy Day of the African Child.
